This is actually a prop news paper, there is a prop company that makes these. You can find them in many shows actually.

[–]heaveninherarms 89 points90 points ago

I'm genuinely curious. What's the purpose of prop newspapers? Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper to just grab a regular newspaper? Is there some strange legal barriers or something?

[–]QueenCityACCT 201 points202 points ago

If you use a real paper someone is going to want royalties or licensing fees.

[–]CavitySearch 41 points42 points ago

I just don't understand how companies expect licensing or royalties for use of a common commercial product. I mean I expect companies probably do it, but it's stupid.

[–]velvethammer44 59 points60 points ago

It's all money.

[–]nojusticephoto 93 points94 points ago

I'm Mitt Romney, and I endorse this message.

[–]nilgiri 5 points6 points ago

No, he said "It's all money" not "I'm all money."

[–]staplesgowhere 9 points10 points ago

Also, at what point does it cross over from a company demanding money for showing a likeness of their product, to having to pay a product placement fee for the publicity?

[–]Kind_Of_A_Dick 7 points8 points ago

It all depends on who makes the decision to show/use the product.

[–]apathetic_youth 1 point2 points ago

Most companies will actually pay you to feature their product in your show

edit* forgot a word

[–]flamingfungi 3 points4 points ago

I want someone to actually me :(

[–]hooplah 7 points8 points ago

Imagine you're a photographer who licensed out/sold a photograph for use in a newspaper. Next thing you know, your photograph is featured in a TV show or movie.

Not condoning a demand for royalties, but why risk it when there are prop newspapers readily available?

[–]nojusticephoto 3 points4 points ago

As a stock photographer, this happens fairly often. I've seen a lot of images from fellow photographers on TV and in movies, I always notify them to let them know their work was used (legitimate or otherwise.)

[–]Polymarchos 5 points6 points ago

This is the big thing. It isn't the branding that will get you in trouble, TV shows can show that stuff without worry, it's the material that has a copyright on it, and therefore can't be reproduced without permission.

[–]carolinax 6 points7 points ago

It's not stupid. If you make something (take a photo, write a story, whatever) to employ yourself and someone else waltzes in and uses your something to make MORE money than you could have ever hoped to have make that's fucked up, right? You can sue them for that. BAM -- That's the reason why prop (objects) exist.

[–]ThatGuy0 1 point2 points ago

round corners bro.

[–]Gravity_Cube 1 point2 points ago

It's hard to argue with stupid

[–]noisess13000 0 points1 point ago

you would think they would use different types

[–]restrainedjubilation 24 points25 points ago

Its also kind of an inside joke among production types

[–]Colonel_Poopcorn 3 points4 points ago

Ding ding ding :)

[–]jobosno 0 points1 point ago

Wilhelm II

[–]badmonkey0001 0 points1 point ago

The Wilhelm has gotten so overused that it's distracting now. Any modern film where I can hear it plainly gets an immediate thumbs-down from me.

[–]Bebinn 24 points25 points ago

the prop newspapers aren't made of paper. they are quieter than paper so there isn't a problem with the noise on the set. i remember that from the last time this pic went around.

[–]ArchangelleCuntpunch 7 points8 points ago

It's also made out of a heavier paper that doesn't wrinkle nearly as easily, unlike regular newspapers which are flimsy as fuck.

[–]KillerInYourCloset 4 points5 points ago

Just replied above, but I'll post it here again so you don't have to dig for it:

Yep! Most people would shit themselves silly if they knew how many props were re-used. I have a lot of friends in the industry, and they blew my mind. Basically, the major studios have a props department, and massive storage area for props. Cell phones? Guns? Vases? Microwaves? prosthetic limbs (yep!)? Girdles? Toolboxes? Check. It's because the set designers usually have a VERY limited amount of time to do the sets, and can't go out and buy new stuff for each scene, plus is would be a huge waste of money because people don't notice. This same newspaper has probably shown up thousands of times. Firefly re-used the Starship Troopers uniforms. You'll see cars, posters, dishes, and even sewer grates re-used if you watch close enough.

You want to see the most re-used, and shittiest inside joke in Hollywood, look up the Wilhelm Scream. Sorry for ruining the magic :(

EDIT: Since everyone asks, I was involved with a startup news company, and met many industry pros (producers, directors and the like) but randomly a friend of mine from high school is actually a producer for SciFy. He's usually the one who tells me all the good stuff- like the time I was with him and he had Val Kilmer on the phone negotiating a contract- I felt pretty cool even though I was in no way involved.

[–]Alsandr 1 point2 points ago

It's funny how the IMDB trivia page ALWAYS has the Wilhelm Scream on it.

[–]Moopies 0 points1 point ago

As a filmmaker, I can confirm this. There's an incredible amount of props that are re-used. In most cities, there are one or two HUGE prop house businesses, and since you're always going to go to the biggest one, many films will have used the same props.

[–]KillerInYourCloset 2 points3 points ago

If there was a reality show BEGGING to be made, it would be people going through these prop houses and finding shit stuffed in a corner- long forgotten- from some famous movie. This is stupid, but I'd love to go to a tag sale and find something like that mini Eiffel tower used in Casablanca (When they pan across the small bar in the scene and go to the piano when Humphrey Bogart says for the second time 'Here's looking at you kid'). Hollywood forgets about these things, but they're out there...

[–]sd70ACeANYDAY 1 point2 points ago

Roseanne used real newspapers from my area most of the time. Kane-DeKalb county in Northern Il. Not watching it to grab a SS.

[–]SirDerpingtonThe3rd 0 points1 point ago

Potential licensing issues (everyone loves to use big-budget operations) as well as the fact that the prop papers are probably easier to buy (just get it from a prop shop/archive) and might be more durable so you can use them take after take.

[–]TheHerbalGerbil 0 points1 point ago

Apart from the issue of licensing mentioned, there’s also the issue that using a certain real-world paper would tie the show/movie to a very specific time/date and place which may not be quite fitting or may not be wanted at all.

[–]Satans_Jewels 6 points7 points ago

So you're saying we can turn this into a "Wilhelm scream."

[–]WhereIsMyLighter 6 points7 points ago

it's still kind of funny that they haven't changed the fake pictures/articles in 20 years

[–]Rocco03 4 points5 points ago

You can also see sheets of this paper flying in Mass Effect 3.

[–]th3KCshuffle 4 points5 points ago

It's neat to know they're out there in other shows but I still find it kind of amazing that Ed O'Neil is reading the same prop newspaper in shows filmed 20 years apart.

[–]KillerInYourCloset 3 points4 points ago

Yep! Most people would shit themselves silly if they knew how many props were re-used. I have a lot of friends in the industry, and they blew my mind. [–]Pinkfloyd09 0 points1 point ago

zing!

[–]alreadytakenusername 2 points3 points ago

I want to see their iPad version newspaper.

[–]kenjith 0 points1 point ago

You asshole, you ruined it for me.

[–]rannie_pophe 0 points1 point ago

Hahah! So it should that all the shows with that prop have a character that "reads the same newspaper as the one in other shows".

[–]PoutineKing 1 point2 points ago

This particular newspaper is actually a joke between prop masters, since it appears in so many films/shows. I suppose it's similar to the Wilhelm Scream.

[–]oshkoshjosh 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure I saw a TIL post about this a few months ago.

The paper is made by the Earl Hay's Press and they're the only company that makes fake newspaper props apparently.

[–]Matt005 0 points1 point ago

Seems like the company should mix them up a bit. It's been 20 years. Change some stuff around.

[–]Mantequillas 0 points1 point ago

[–]kavorka2 107 points108 points ago

He also marries hot, big-breasted, loud and unusually insightful women (though everyone writes them off as bimbos) in both shows.

[–]TheBoxTalks 35 points36 points ago

I think hot and insightful are a bit of a stretch for Peg.

[–]saremei 46 points47 points ago

Peg might have been intended as unattractive in the story world of Married With Children, but in reality she was hot.

[–]ReeG 20 points21 points ago

She's a legit MILF in Sons Of Anarchy

[–]hardwarequestions 14 points15 points ago

she's pretty hot on Futurama as well.

[–]Professional_Asshat 1 point2 points ago

So said Jimmy Smits.

[–]StoneGoldX 1 point2 points ago

Take the wig and hot pants off, and Katey Segal was a piece of work. But strap them on, and instant boner killer. Odd, I know, where the tighter the pants, the worse the look, although it could also just be the nasal whine of AAAAaaaaal.... But she's hotter now at 100 than she was back then.

[–]theboxisempty 17 points18 points ago

[–]thebitchrake 0 points1 point ago

It's unbelievable how foxy she was on that show. I couldn't stop admiring how great she looks.

[–]robo23 7 points8 points ago

I just turn down the volume and think about fucking Christina Applegate.

[–]SirDerpingtonThe3rd 5 points6 points ago

Sweet jesus, yes. Even in my prepubescent days, I knew Christina Applegate was hot as shit.

[–]godmoderage 3 points4 points ago

Insightful? No. Hot? Sweet jesus yes.

[–]NEED_A_JACKET 10 points11 points ago

Hey I just heard about that.

[–]sp00kyd00m 0 points1 point ago

you should win a fucking prize for that one, mate.

[–]inertia186 50 points51 points ago

[–]Spazit 22 points23 points ago

I can't justify downvoting this post because clearly a lot of people didn't know about the whole 'prop newspaper that is everywhere' thing, but at the same time if I had a litre of water for every time I see this paper then I would probably be set for my water consumption over the next 2-3 days.

[–]BankshotMcG 1 point2 points ago

And you would be T Boone Pickens.

[–]Wbran 0 points1 point ago

Downvote it anyway. OP (Mepper) if the biggest fucking karma whore on this website.

[–]Einchy 4 points5 points ago

I dugg this once upon a time.

[–]xnerdyxrealistx 72 points73 points ago

Title = unoriginal

[–]lazyduke 39 points40 points ago

Furthermore, his mind is NOT EQUAL TO BLOWN.

[–]ErrorlessGnome 13 points14 points ago

It'd be more:

Mind --> Blown

[–]scithion 1 point2 points ago

mind.Blown()?

[–]structurer 0 points1 point ago

Mind: Blown

[–]Program_These 3 points4 points ago

Mind < blown

[–]Cratonz 2 points3 points ago

I dunno, maybe if he overrode Object.Equals()...

[–]deyur 3 points4 points ago

Then he'd need to use

mind.equals(blown);

because

mind = blown

is an assignment.

[–]darkowl 2 points3 points ago

regardless the method should still return false in this case

[–]deyur 2 points3 points ago

Well, it could be a really shitty .equals() implementation.

public boolean equals(Object other) {return true;}

Judging by how easily redditors minds seem to be blown, I think this would fit the spec.

[–]ull90 4 points5 points ago

Mind = intact

[–]YouSaidADumbThing 2 points3 points ago

It's mepper, the repost king. Fucking surprise that he's titling shit like a moron.

[–]velvethammer44 0 points1 point ago

Comment = useless

[–]skysignor 1 point2 points ago

Why can't people just be more creative? God what assholes

[–]FA-Hayek 8 points9 points ago

At least he IS reading.

[–]Daemonator 13 points14 points ago

Doubtful since it takes him that long to get through one newspaper.

[–]NBornKillerCell 7 points8 points ago

Repetition is the key to success.

[–]Capn_Crotch 0 points1 point ago

This is the first time I've randomly stumbled across a comment of yours without actively seeking them out.

That just struck me as weird.

[–]skysignor -1 points0 points ago

That's debatable what with the whole same-newspaper thing which is kinda the gist of this post

[–]el_notario 8 points9 points ago

It's not fake, it's a set prop. Not that hard to believe. Cool find though.

[–]Mitty002 0 points1 point ago

Just to let you know, this is a repost. OP did not find this.

[–]lildansonman 0 points1 point ago

That's a funny picture I wonder if he noticed it before seeing that.

[–]prodah_kiir 4 points5 points ago

Yeah.. because fake newspapers cost money.. that same print is in countless movies and televisions shows.

[–]OhAces 3 points4 points ago

555-555-5555

[–]SarcasticMC 13 points14 points ago

I'm sorry, but I fail to see why this is funny. This IS /r/funny, right? I'm not in the wrong subreddit?

[–]ihavecrayons 10 points11 points ago

What? You didn't burst out into laughter?

[–]MangoAgogo 6 points7 points ago

George Takei just posted this on his Facebook page too!

[–]LasciviousSycophant 0 points1 point ago

I like to imagine Modern Family is Married With Children 25 years later.

[–]Program_These 0 points1 point ago

I saw a thread not to long ago that showed scense, all from different shows, that had the same paper. Or atleast the picture of that lady is on all of them hahaha.

Maybe it's just a standard newspaper.

[–]thatssorelevant 2 points3 points ago

And the link to the article about this paper: http://www.slashfilm.com/lol-the-reoccurring-prop-newspaper/

[–]Ovedya2011 6 points7 points ago

Why is it not all yellow?

[–]emr1028 33 points34 points ago

Ed actually lost his ability to convert short term to long term memory year ago. Every day he wakes up having completely forgotten the last twenty years and still thinking it's 1992. His family purchased thousands of newspapers from the day after his accident so that every day he wakes up as if nothing has happened. Nobody has the heart to tell him, but even if they did, he would forget it as he sleeps and wake up the next day still thinking it's 1992. It's truly tragic.

Staring Adam Sandler

[–]Ovedya2011 7 points8 points ago

....As Ed, and his wife's transgendered bisexual lover.

[–]panamaspace 0 points1 point ago

What about the other 16 wives from the days he had whirlwind romances ending in a Vegas marriage?

[–]Ovedya2011 1 point2 points ago

All played by Eddie Murphy.

[–]large-farva 1 point2 points ago

don't believe emr1028's lies. he is the one. kill him.

[–]Ethanol_Gut 20 points21 points ago

TV shows and movies usually use this one fictitious newspapers every single time you see a character reading the paper.

http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2010/06/07/the_story_behind_the_recycled_newspaper_prop.html

[–]SubtleMockery 5 points6 points ago

I bet you it's been specifically market tested and deliberately crafted to be exactly what a newspaper "looks like".

[–]jeweylewey 15 points16 points ago

As apposed to looking like a sandwich.

[–]Derpshiz 0 points1 point ago

It can be so confusing

[–]Kanye_Westicles 3 points4 points ago

[–]Wbran 1 point2 points ago

Finally someone else whose realized it. Fuck this guy.

[–]Magzter 3 points4 points ago

HE'S AL!?!? HOW THE FUCK AM I JUST REALISING THIS.

[–]lildansonman 0 points1 point ago

He was also in "Jon from Cincinnati" a criminally underrated show.

[–]capt_0bvious 1 point2 points ago

so what, Christians read one book over and over again until they die.

[–]SteampunkSloth 6 points7 points ago

As a religious person, I can confirm I've read Lord of the Rings quite a bit.

[–]mateogg 2 points3 points ago

I don't think he means they don't read anything else, he means that Christians never really "stop" reading the bible, its not the kind of book you "finish"

[–]Fishstixxx16 1 point2 points ago

Funny, I saw this on my FB news feed (insert submitted time).

[–]AnalBurns 0 points1 point ago

Actually, the entirety of Hollywood uses that same newspaper.

[–]IAmAMagicLion -1 points0 points ago

Real newspapers have reposts to!!

[–]massrabbler -1 points0 points ago

You know it's funny, because I saw this on Facebook before I saw it on Reddit today.

What has the world come to.

Also, seriously this is old

[–]Lamar_the_Usurper 1 point2 points ago

Also: Ed O'Neill is a martial arts expert.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wVlZX6Bw9E

[–]tekno45 0 points1 point ago

Because people keep interupting him!

[–]DmagnusV 0 points1 point ago

Had to show this to my wife. Now she's addicted to reddit.

[–]PictureTraveller 5 points6 points ago

sorry for your loss

[–]Mozen 1 point2 points ago

It's actually a thing in Hollywood. They have various props that are used in nearly every movie and t.v. show. Some are reused as inside jokes to the producers and such, some like this newspaper are reused because they cannot contain any 'real' news from the media. Therefore recreating a fake newspaper for every episode that needs one is too costly.

[–]purplewhiteblack 0 points1 point ago

and Ed O'neil always has a hot wife, a son, and a cute blond daughter.

[–]Ekiph 0 points1 point ago

He's a really slow reader.

[–]AutobotSpringer -1 points0 points ago

You'd think the prop company could update their merchandise. The woman in the photo has total 80s hair.

[–]mew5175 0 points1 point ago

When the newspaper industry falls completely and everyone gets news on their iPads, all our problems will be solved.

Except for those who will say "OMG... IS THAT THE SAME IPAD FROM (enter other movie or show)?!!?"

[–]blackHAWKrisng 1 point2 points ago

This is because neither of his families would shut the fuck up long enough for him to finish the damn paper. Always with the talking. When will they learn?

[–]jostler57 1 point2 points ago

Either he's a slow reader, or that's the best damn newspaper edition ever printed.

[–]nonosejoe 0 points1 point ago

That newspaper is in every TV show since... well, since before the internet.

[–]BobFiggy 0 points1 point ago

Ed is also a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k3yjN1KrqfM

[–]Animalzrcool 1 point2 points ago

Didn't make me laugh but upvoted cause it blew my mind

[–]CrewmanInRed 1 point2 points ago

[–]Shadowsdogs 0 points1 point ago

That's incredible.

[–]zewthenimp 1 point2 points ago

I can't believe his male pattern baldness hasn't progressed in 20 years. What's his secret?

[–]zerosanity -1 points0 points ago

It's an inside joke for prop guys. Much like the wilhelm scream for sound guys. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_scream

[–]bbqrescheduled 0 points1 point ago

if that blows your mind you should get out more!

[–]marsh283 0 points1 point ago

Because he keeps getting interrupted! Give him a break.

[–]AlienWarlock 0 points1 point ago

They use that same newspaper in hundreds of films and TV shows.

[–]mahtoobah 0 points1 point ago

Longer than 20.

[–]joe_devola 0 points1 point ago

The women in the picture is like the modern day mona lisa

[–]DeceptiStang 0 points1 point ago

I love Al Bundy.

I, too, subscribe to George Takei.

[–]Abbotofdenial 0 points1 point ago

Ed O'Neil = Forever Awesome.

[–]CupICup 1 point2 points ago

[–]poorbowelcontrol 0 points1 point ago

George Takei made this popular before reddit

Just wait until you look up Morley Cigarettes...

[–]Throwway28 -1 points0 points ago

So, a fat woman wonders into the shoe store this morning and says; "Give me something I can fit in. And I tell her, try Texas." Some great one liners in that show.

[–]Lorf30 -1 points0 points ago

He's not done with it yet because everyone is always interrupting him!

[–]CmonTouchIt -1 points0 points ago

To be fair, there were a bunch of interesting stories that day

[–]SOMETHING_POTATO -1 points0 points ago

Have you ever tried to read an entire newspaper? Considering I read the paper for maybe 10 minutes a day, I think it could realistically take me a year to read a whole paper.

[–]COXIMUS -1 points0 points ago

Is it really necessary to have a newspaper "prop"?

[–]tjtoste -1 points0 points ago

The only part about my mind=blown is the part where someone actually notices this.

[–]Intow1 0 points1 point ago

Not to mention two hot wives..

[–]geek_loser 0 points1 point ago

That's because after 3 seconds into reading it he get interrupted. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.

[–]stevemeister23 0 points1 point ago

Hollywood often uses the same props. nice find though

[–]klanus 0 points1 point ago

You know what's funny I only watch modern family to see Sofia Vergara's boobs. Those things are gigantic . LMAO

[–]pokelord13 0 points1 point ago

how did they incorporate it into a different show?

[–]Brule_Tools 0 points1 point ago

Kinda blew my mind last night, was watching Futurama, and saw the episode, "A Bicyclops Built for Two" - in which Alcazar is basically Al Bundy; and Leela (voiced by Katey Sagal) basically becomes Peggy Bundy.

After having seen a lot of Married... With Children, and this same episode many times - It finally clicked. And was thus horribly funny, while depressing.

[–]countryboyathome 1 point2 points ago

I think you just found a glitch in the matrix.

[–]jrmf 0 points1 point ago

He's held onto the remaining of his hair quite well.

[–]Beardcore1982 0 points1 point ago

If you look it up. The same paper is used in a lot of shows and movies.

[–]CuriousAnn 0 points1 point ago

Not just this show. The SAME newspapers are seen in desperate housewives, and other shows.

[–]perrinoia 0 points1 point ago

Not everyone reads as fast as you!

[–]Ober7 0 points1 point ago

we need better things to blow minds with.

[–]HowOriginal26 0 points1 point ago

Who the fuck notices this stuff?

[–]BaseActionBastard 0 points1 point ago

He has probably been stuck on the same damn sentence for the last 20 years because he keeps getting interrupted by sitcom shenanigans.

[–]laquerhead 0 points1 point ago

Must be some really good articles.

[–]viperstarpoint9 0 points1 point ago

Um this could just be a producers joke.
