If you missed with his hand then it would still count as a hit. Imagine is Mario was a few pixels to the right. The only explanation in that case was that he was hitting it with his head.

Plenty of people still do, even the Robot Chicken folks have him bonk his head in the Mario Kart/GTA sketch they did.

I was always confused that people thought he used his head. Look at all of the boxart and you can see that, in most of them, his fist is raised and he is mid-jump.

Even as a child with my crappy TV I could plainly see that it was his hand. I remember initially thinking that he could spit fireballs but at some point noticed his hand going up and made the connection. The world was crazy but it had limits, man.

haha maybe I was the weird one as a kid or just spoiled with a larger TV. All this talk had me confused because at a very young age I just thought... Well there is his hand so clearly he wouldn't hit it with his head..... WHERE DOES THE FIREBALL COME FROM? HAND OR MOUTH?!! consider the can o' worms opened.

EDIT: On another note, I DID just notice the coins are really just cigars with those we had a baby stickers across the middle.
