What's the story behind this gif?

[–]RUiN427 18 points19 points ago

Military personel generally don't take kindly to civilian salute. It is often done incorrectly or not to regulation standards and can be considered disrespectful or simply annoying.

[–]WBuffettJr 31 points32 points ago

And in that case it's appropriate to yell and scream and throw a fit at someone on national television for trying to show respect. Got it.

[–]EyesOnEverything 4 points5 points ago

He was also presumed to be a fan of the opposing team. Not that it should matter, but an interesting tidbit.

[–]TheLastMuse 8 points9 points ago

What a bunch of cunts to get so bent out of shape over that.

[–]AdrianDrake 13 points14 points ago

well he looks like a marine, and most of the time, marines are fucking nut jobs (2 family members ex marines and 4 friends currently IN marines) i cant even stand to be around them any more

[–]TheOneWhoMoos 1 point2 points ago

He was not saluting the marine. He was shushing the crowd. If you look closely his arm is not high enough to salute.

[–]SirAuron 1 point2 points ago

Probably the problem. If you cannot salute properly, you are going to have a bad time.

[–]skarface6 8 points9 points ago

You're not supposed to salute enlisted personnel. The football player was going to salute the (gunnery sergeant?) enlisted Marine. The Marine was having none of it. Also, civilians don't salute the military.

That's the story from /r/cfb, at least.

[–]cunt_stamp 3 points4 points ago

The real story is that he didn't want to be the part of the opposing teams touchdown celebration. YES, he was going to salute the Marine, but it's obviously because of the touchdown. I seriously doubt the first thing that came to the officers mind was "I need to prevent this salute because its disrespectful!".

Interesting. But does not the marine end up bringing shame upon the corps by doing that strange bobblehead hissyfit? In public?

[–]JadeSomething 3 points4 points ago

I've also be curious about this.

I would assume you could find some backstory in one of these.

The marine is a huge dick. That's pretty much the story. The Texas player scored a touchdown and stopped to salute the marine, and the marine took offense because it was in the other teams stadium so apparently salutes are horrible all of a sudden. Edit: Cool, not sure why I'm getting all the downvotes. The guy doing the saluting is a U.S. Olympian who loves his country. Marines are allowed to be called dicks sometimes too.

[–]BigRedRobotNinja 4 points5 points ago

Not salute, shush the crowd.

[–]grizzlymann 1 point2 points ago

To be fair that Marine is enlisted. You don't salute a Gunnery Sergeant.

Save that crap for officers.

[–]skarface6 -2 points-1 points ago

The consensus from where this was posted elsewhere is that's it's disrespectful to salute him, especially as a civilian.

[–]WBuffettJr 17 points18 points ago

That's cool. He tried to show respect in the way not of your choosing. There are ways to get that word out without losing your damn mind like a roiding bro who had a gin and tonic spilled on his Ed Hardy jeans at the bar and screaming at him on national television. The marine acted like a dick. I don't understand why I'm getting so many downvotes for that. It is possible for marines to be dicks sometimes too.

The hat is an alien being eating away at the mans skull, he is crying for help.

[–]ActualContent 7 points8 points ago

Well there's your problem. You weren't heading for your desk, she was just trying to help you.

[–]shagotobed 4 points5 points ago

I'm sorry! My husband is a lucky man. He is out of town for work and both our copies showed up today and I told him I wouldn't play until he's back! Sunday is far away! I am excite!

[–]KennedyRules6 7 points8 points ago

He was "shushing the crowd" not saluting the marine. Gunnys just probably a big ole miss fan, and maybe a bit of a dick.

[–]AdamarLives 3 points4 points ago

Yup, this is the actual story. I can confirm.

[–]RdoubleU 1 point2 points ago

What are your credentials?

[–]AdamarLives 2 points3 points ago

UT student, went to game.

[–]twoforjoy 1 point2 points ago

I pre-ordered this game for my husband. Today I regretted that decision just a little bit.

I accidentally left my keys at work. Luckily I had an extra set of car keys in my purse, but no house keys.

Also, please note: it rained cats and dogs today.

I got home and stood outside in the rain knocking on the door for several minutes. I called my husband's cell phone multiple times. No answer to either.

Finally I trudged around the house to the bedroom window (his PS3 is hooked up in the bedroom) and I knocked frantically on the window, calling to him to let me in.

Finally he answered, but only after pausing Borderlands 2 and telling his friend via his headset to hang on a minute did he come around to the door to let me in.

[–]jacebarber 0 points1 point ago

The games a bit complicated at first but it's awesome. I ended up gambling all my money away at moxxies place.

I'm in the military and I even find this guy to be king of douche baggery. And start with this, he's a grizzled nco bullshit. I'm an nco and I wouldn't dare act this way.

[–]antlion_safari -1 points0 points ago

I actually lol'd.

[–]Karokash 0 points1 point ago

so regardless of what the situation for the gif was, I chuckled at the title. pretty much exact same thing happened as soon as I got home. I even snuck in while she was upstairs and as soon as she heard the PS3 boot up that was it.. so close

[–]daragaaz -1 points0 points ago

My wife preordered the game, she freakin loves Borderlands. I really AM the luckiest man on Earth, lol.

[–]MrSwizzlers -1 points0 points ago

I wonder how many more times this gif will be reposted.
