For people confused about the difference between the 4S and the 5:

  • Screen diagonally half an inch bigger
  • Nearly twice as fast
  • Better camera
  • Significantly thinner and lighter
  • 4G LTE
  • Switch to a hopefully-sturdier aluminum back
  • Switch to a different connector design

This upgrade actually seems more significant than previous updates. I'm not sure why all the posts about them being the same. I think reddit was just hoping for a worthless upgrade so they could post their jokes, but then decided to post them anyway.

Seriously though, who else would care about it not being a big upgrade from the last iteration?

People that own iPhone 3G/3GS would be getting a huge upgrade.

People that own Androids or Windows phones have no real reason to care, unless they're thinking about switching to iPhone, in which case they'd be getting an upgrade unless they just recently bought a new android phone.

I think it's just iPhone4 and 4S users that don't want to drop the money to upgrade, so they make themselves feel better by saying it's not a big upgrade.

As an iPhone 4 user, I'll be upgrading in December when my upgrade status rolls around.

It's an upgrade but doesn't feel as big of one as when I went from my 3G to the 4.

It is. It's not as big as jump as the 3Gs to 4, but it's much bigger than the 4=>4S or the 3G=>3Gs jump, and about on par with the iPhone=>iPhone 3G jump. So right about where you'd expect it to be in the product lifecycle for a full-digit version increment.

It's debatable. Depends on what features you care most about. I personally think that going from the old display to the retina display just entirely overshadows everything else. :)

I don't know, although it's not a technical achievement like the retina display, and some people won't care as much, the change from 3:2 to 16:9 is also pretty tremendous. Especially for developers.

Because it is some how "cool" to hate on any and every Apple product, no matter how well made it is. I honestly gets annoying. I am a fan of both PCs and Macs, as well as Android and IOS phones.

I will say this. I have owned 2 android smart phones and both are (now) buggy and slow. Not to mention the fact that my 1st android is only 2 years old and can not even update further then 2.3.4. I call that garbage. Correct me if im mistaken but the iPhone 3 (which is much older then my droid x) is able to update to IOS 4.

How many pictures do I need to take inorder to get a decent one with my android? Around 3 to 4. How many pictures do I need to take with my iPhone? 1. How many times have my android devices crashed on me? At least once a day. How many times has my Iphone crashed? I could probably count the TOTAL amount with my fingers. How many times has android launched unwanted apps which requires a 3rd party app so your battery life is not laughable? EVERY FREAKING MINUTE!!!!

I find that Android devices have the hottest and newest tech but they are generally poorly designed and made. They are outdated within a couple of months. While the Iphone is still a good competitor against the newest android devices.

Purchase what phone you like, but there is no reason to put down the iPhone. Apple tends to stretch everything that they say about their new products but thats what I call genius marketing.

The camera is the same. It's almost the same module. Just smaller.

Camera app changed a bit, but it takes the same pictures and videos.

Unless I am mistaken, its actually not the exact same module, but as far as the consumer is concerned it is.

The specifications are the same, and the quality is the same, but the module itself is supposedly thinner.

Your point is still valid though, the camera hardware is not better.

Specifications are the same (i.e., the resolution and the maximum lens aperture), but that doesn't say the quality is the same--given that it's newer technology with either the same photosite size, one would expect (and Apple has stated) that the light gathering ability has improved, which will lead to less noise in lower light photos.

Plus, much more scratch-resistant sapphire crystal over the front lens element is a bonus.

My understanding is that camera sensor is actually smaller. Which in the case of a phone camera isn't exactly a good thing.

I have seen evidence on the Internet saying both ways (i.e., that it's slightly smaller and that it's slightly larger).

I think the evidence for "slightly smaller" is just the fact that it's in a smaller form factor now. DPReview has some evidence for slightly larger, and I would trust them more.

From http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/09/12/Apple-iPhone-5-vs-iPhone-4S-image-comparison :

Close examination shows the iPhone 5 is using a 4.1mm lens to give a 33mm equivalent field of view, rather than the 4S's 4.3mm lens, which gave a 35mm equivalent view. This means the new sensor is a tiny fraction larger.

So I think it's not the sensor that's smaller so much as the camera module as a whole. I.e., same (or fractionally larger) sensor area, but the electronics and whatnot behind the sensor have have gotten smaller to accommodate the smaller form factor of the phone. It's really not like Apple to take a step backwards on the camera quality, after all.

You're playing lawyer here where it's unneccesary. Yes, technically and literally it is a different camera in that some components have been significantly modified to get this thing in a small form factor.

HOWEVER... realistically, the two have pretty much indistinguishable capabilities.

Also, the charger port is totally different, to make the charger go in any which way. BUT, what this means is that all the other doohickeys that previously were compatible with earlier versions of the iPhone are no longer compatible with the iPhone 5. Also, the GPS system now talks to you turn by turn, and has a 3D option where you can literally see the buildings pop up in front of you.

Yeah, that's more mocking human nature than Apple fans specifically. And a phone out of a case is going to seem like it's a different form factor than a phone in a case, which was how everyone in that video who had an iPhone was carrying theirs. And a brand new 4S is going to seem faster than a 4S that's been turned on and running apps for a while and letting its memory get a bit fragmented and probably has a few background processes running. Combine those and the natural human willingness to believe what an authority figure tells you and it's easy to see why people would legitimately think it was all new.

Anyway, none of those people were real Apple fans or they'd have known that the iPhone hadn't been released yet. :-P

Yes, it's a nice device and there are some fairly significant differences (particularly that boost in processing power).

However, if I owned an iPhone4 or iPhone4S, then this wouldn't warrant a purchase. What baffles me is not that people buy iPhones (that makes perfect sense) but that thousands line up to buy the new model when their current one is perfectly fine. That mentality makes no sense to me.

I use my electronics as long as I can before replacing anything. Hell, the laptop I'm typing this on is almost three years old. When it slowed down I upgraded it with an SSD for about $80 and now it's running like magic. I'm not replacing it for another year or more assuming it doesn't give out on me by then.

To me, this and the screen change is the only thing on my radar. I'm so sick of people calling the 4S the 4G (because they went 3,3G,4,...) and thinking it was 4G. Not worth my $200 and 2 year contract extension though when the 4 is free.

I have not owned an iPhone since the 3g, I have owned 2 android phones in between, the Motorola Milestone and the HTC Desire HD.

I have really enjoyed all 3 phones, it has been about 3 years since I owned an iPhone so I pre-ordered the iPhone 5 just to see how it compares to my Desire HD. I really wish that I had owned an android phone capable of running ICS / Jellybean to really get a good side by side of the best that both platforms can offer.

I find your snark ironic, OP. I'm pretty tech savvy, but I couldn't do a very good job at correctly naming Android phones by glancing at a picture taken from any one angle. There's what, 3 Droid versions? 3 Galaxy S versions? Hundreds more?

But everyone knows what the iPhone looks like. And I bet most would be able to identify if it's a 4S or a 5 by comparing two pictures. Apple has succeeded at making its products stand apart from their competitors.

Besides, let people buy what they want to own. When my friends grab the latest Android phone on day 1, I'm excited for them. I know firsthand how excited they must feel. It doesn't matter to me that I can't tell the difference between their new one and their old one at first glance.

If you have an upgrade available and the money to upgrade it makes sense to do so. Most companies have you paying a little extra each month to cover your bi-annual update. So each month that you let your upgrade sit there your cellphone service provider is still taking in a little extra with no benefit to you.

Which is why I will be upgrading to the five. I have the upgrade and feel it's wasteful to let it sit for another year when I can sell my current phone and completely cover the cost of upgrading.
