It's not a multiple exposure, it's a picture with a bunch of planes photoshopped into it. At least half of those airlines don't fly to Hanover, most of them don't line up.

oh and it's a repost of a repost of a repost

[–]camleish 22 points23 points ago

yep. several of the planes are configured for landing, the perspective is all off, some of the headings are too extreme to be immediately following takeoff, etc.

[–]nitefang 13 points14 points ago

Some of the airplanes are also incapable of crossing the Atlantic, yet they have American tail numbers, or at least that was mentioned the first time this was posted.

[–]Browsin_at_Work[!] 10 points11 points ago

Air New Zealand must now be operating commuter flights out of Hanover.

[–]aaronaqua1 2 points3 points ago

That's what set me off! An Air New Zealand ATR-72 out of Germany? Right.

Not to mention that some of those aircraft don't even have their landing gears down...

[–]daviator88 1 point2 points ago

And just look at the Cirrus actin' the ass.

[–]bobstay 0 points1 point ago

Here in the UK we have plenty of small planes with american tail numbers. They get ferried across via greenland and iceland with big fuel tanks in the back.

[–]TheGenerico 5 points6 points ago

Also, Virgin Blue and SWA in the same photo? I don't think so.

[–]Zpiritual 2 points3 points ago

Also, some planes seem to be going at a 45 º angle from the "runway"/rest of the planes. Lower left for example. Poor photoshop to say the least...

[–]nauticalmile 2 points3 points ago

The Japan Airlines 747 being dwarfed by a Lufthansa ERJ-100 is not particularly believable.

[–]handsy_pilot 1 point2 points ago

"Pitch" is the term you are looking for.

[–]camleish 0 points1 point ago

that too, but i mean heading in relation to the runway. e.g. the smartwings 737 is oriented significantly right of the runway.

[–]spmcfarland 75 points76 points ago

I don't know about takeoff, but it's amazing how well aircraft line up when landing.

Here is a legit multiple exposure that I took at Houston's IAH, where the camera stayed in exactly the same place for each shot.

I also did a similar thing with video. (edit: Here's the same video on youtube, since Flickr video sucks in some browsers.)

[–]plepleus 36 points37 points ago

The dragonfly appears to be taking a different flight path

[–]spmcfarland 30 points31 points ago

Yeah, that dragonfly was way off course. I think the pilot may have been drinking.

[–]TehRedBaron 5 points6 points ago

To be fair, the landings wouldn't go very well if the aircraft didn't line up.

[–]McFeely_Smackup 13 points14 points ago

Not to be a jerk, but that's not a "multiple exposure", that's a composite photo (as you labeled it in flickr).

[–]spmcfarland 17 points18 points ago

That's technically correct (the best kind of correct), but I was trying to differentiate between OP's photo (which is also composite, just from many different angles) and my photo (which is a composite where the camera didn't move).

Since I was replying to agha0013 who used the term 'multiple exposure', I just figured I'd roll with it. Sorry for the confusion.

[–]magus424 1 point2 points ago

Don't roll with invalid terminology...

[–]spmcfarland 3 points4 points ago

Don't roll with invalid use of an elipsis.

[–]igottadomath 0 points1 point ago

I think you should have at least distinguished between multiple exposure and composite in your original reply. . . A real multiple exposure would look nothing like either of the photos since in that light especially the photo would have been horrendously overexposed.

[–]spmcfarland 3 points4 points ago

I think that 'multiple exposure' has come to have an ambiguous meaning. In the days of film photography, it simply meant opening and closing the shutter multiple times on the same piece of film.

With digital photography, that's barely even possible (yes, I know you can open the shutter, then cover the lens, wait a while, uncover the lens, then close the shutter; but it's really not quite the same), so the term 'multiple exposure' has generally come to mean a composite of images taken with the same camera.

In this case, I just wanted to address agha0013's concern: that the OP's image was a composite of many photos from many places, angles, lighting, and possibly photographers.

When somebody looks at the OP's image, they're likely to think, "Wow, that's what it would look like if each airplane taking off was captured in one image." It isn't. In my image, that is exactly the case (though while landing, not taking off). That's all I was trying to convey.

[–]igottadomath 0 points1 point ago

Ah okay. I was unaware that true multiple exposure wasn't possible in digital photography, since I only have any real photography experience with film. Hence me getting all huffy about you using the terms "composite" and "multiple exposure" interchangeably despite you seeming rather knowledgable about photography.

[–]ivievine 0 points1 point ago

Your patience. It's inspiring.

[–]McFeely_Smackup -1 points0 points ago

I wasn't confused...just being pedantic.

the video was wicked cool though. did you adjust the landing speeds or is that just how they came out?

[–]spmcfarland 2 points3 points ago

That's just how they came out. I was surprised to see that even though the line they take is nearly identical, their speeds are way different.

Also, I cheated the video a little bit so that it can loop seamlessly. So the last few airplanes to enter the frame are the first few that land.

[–]camleish 4 points5 points ago

that is a really great shot. the reason they line up so well is that they are flying on a defined glide slope in conjunction with an instrument landing system.

[–]agha0013 0 points1 point ago

That's a cool picture. Exactly how it should look versus the OP's pic I especially like the dragonfly trying to be a part of the fun

[–]KingPads 0 points1 point ago

I can't help but hear Ride of the Valkyries in my mind while watching these

[–]jweinstein 1 point2 points ago

Awesome video. It's like 737's on parade then BAM...747-400 to show 'em who's boss.

[–]spmcfarland 1 point2 points ago

There are 30 airplanes in the video, but I had to take about 50 clips to get enough variety. It was at IAH, so almost all the planes landing were Continental 737s or Continental Express ERJ145s.

When the 747 lined up, I got pretty excited. I got a really nice still photo of that one, too.

[–]namegoeswhere 0 points1 point ago

Dude, those are really cool. I know what I'm doing this weekend.

[–]spmcfarland 0 points1 point ago

It's a really fun and very easy project. If you're at an airport like IAH, there's a parking lot at the end of the runway for spectators. Take a cold drink, a radio and a picnic, set up the camera and just chill.

[–]namegoeswhere 0 points1 point ago

MSP. Haven't really looked in a long, long time, but but I don't think there are any good spots under the approach that won't get me in trouble.

[–]spmcfarland 1 point2 points ago

Most big airports have a pretty active group of spotters that share information about the best places to watch landings and takeoffs. MSP is no different

[–]namegoeswhere 0 points1 point ago

wow, sweet! didn't even think of looking for spotters, thanks!

[–]TheSemiTallest 9 points10 points ago

This [wo]man speaks the truth!

[–]cyan-nat 3 points4 points ago

So if this fake, are there any pictures like this that are real? Because now I'm very interested in seeing one.

[–]agha0013 3 points4 points ago

This is a picture from London Gatwick airport. I think it is still partially shopped because otherwise, most of the airplanes would be right on top of each other. http://www.airplane-pictures.net/photo/89889/airport-overview-airport-overview-runway/

[–]SirNoName 1 point2 points ago

There was this video I saw once where a guy took videos of planes landing and delayed it by a few frames, then pasted it on top of the old video, so it looked like a long line of planes landing seperated by a few feet each.
The comments on that video were hilarious.

[–]cyan-nat 0 points1 point ago

It's a shame it doesn't look as cool as OP's, but it still is pretty neat. Thanks.

[–]Musclecar123 2 points3 points ago

Yup, I'd like to see how that ANZ Dash 8-400 made it all the way to Germany.

[–]AgentSmith27 0 points1 point ago

not only that, but the angle of that top left plane is damned near suicidal.

[–]mrgreenjeans9 0 points1 point ago

i don't care, it's still cool

[–]akaZilong 0 points1 point ago

All I need to say is southwest airlines, they definitely don't fly to Europe

[–]thedudeabides85 0 points1 point ago

I was gonna say... when did southwest and midwest expand service...

[–]Derp128 0 points1 point ago

Ouch! right into the karma

[–]zaffol 43 points44 points ago

Can't wait to see it again in 3 days!

[–]gizzledos 31 points32 points ago

Southwest flies out of Hannover? I call bullshit.

[–]shooptek 4 points5 points ago

This is exactly what I said last time this was posted here.

[–]simster7 1 point2 points ago

You take your rewards in karma, right?

[–]Arrrrrmondo 0 points1 point ago

Which time?

[–]DoubleStuffedCheezIt 0 points1 point ago

The picture is just a picture of a plane at Hanover with tons of different planes Photoshoped in. A real example of a multiple exposure photo was given here.

[–]HapNz 7 points8 points ago

Foul, Air New Zealand link aircraft are regional aircraft inside of, not surprisingly, New Zealand.

[–]gizadog 5 points6 points ago

I hope someone reposts this again with a stupid title! I love that shit!

[–]Frogger05 7 points8 points ago

Multiple reposts at Hanover Airport.

[–]Bananarama20 10 points11 points ago

That's not what that is.

[–]TheNatch 9 points10 points ago

[–]CakeSmasher 0 points1 point ago

Not sure if projectile vomiting or sucking up planes...

[–]ledanser 3 points4 points ago

the repost, it hurts....

[–]thermocoffee 0 points1 point ago

Not multiple exposures but very well composited!

[–]McFeely_Smackup 2 points3 points ago

that's not how multiple exposure works.

failure.

[–]tiMMy4190 1 point2 points ago

STOP REPOSTING THIS!

[–]evbomby 1 point2 points ago

This has been reposted almost as many times as there are photoshopped planes in the picture.

[–]sorry_but 1 point2 points ago

So a RJ is as tall as a 74?

Retarded post is retarded.

[–]drvo 0 points1 point ago

I read "Multiple Explosions at Hanover Airport".

[–]Forgetful_Rock 0 points1 point ago

Aaaand they're off!

[–]DSMRossi 0 points1 point ago

Pilot training in Afghanistan

[–]AppleBlossom63 0 points1 point ago

Ready... set... GO!

[–]MeetMeAtThePub 0 points1 point ago

The Lufthansa Regional jet has reverse thrust engaged. ಠ_ಠ

[–]UnintentionalUnicorn 0 points1 point ago

Er

[–]GitEmSteveDave 0 points1 point ago

They have dogs that will come to the airport and chase those away, so they don't collide with any birds.

[–]20buckssays 0 points1 point ago

Thomson has no idea what it's doing.

[–]jimlii 0 points1 point ago

If you look on the far right, there is a Boeing 747 taking off. It appears to be roughly twice as big as the single prop planes in the center of the picture...

[–]Manevolence 0 points1 point ago

Autobots, ROLL OUT!

[–]csleigh8 0 points1 point ago

since when do southwest and united express fly to hanover?

[–]CallMeAnEngineer 0 points1 point ago

Hehe, looks like reddit to an OAG AMA.

[–]Raivion 0 points1 point ago

makes me think of this commercial: https://vimeo.com/30869679

[–]TitaniumSwords 0 points1 point ago

RRRRRREPOST

[–]lonemonk 0 points1 point ago

Reprint. Also they are not all from Hanover. Lots of planes in the pic never get to europe

[–]Dinocologist 0 points1 point ago

I would be shitting my pants.

[–]gypsygib 0 points1 point ago

Why does that look more like amazing video game graphics instead of reality to me?

[–]Markarianp 0 points1 point ago

that's strange, i could of swore i saw that on every delta flight i go on

[–]potatoman96 0 points1 point ago

This is me on Flight Sim.

[–]2773625 0 points1 point ago

I dont understand, if you take a picture of an airplane and take another picture without the airplane, wont the original look transparent?

[–]Lurkerhereduh 0 points1 point ago

This looks really dangerous... All those photoshops could cause a crash.

[–]jheeoonnk 0 points1 point ago

Looks like a bunch of toy planes

[–]boomchaos 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the new wallpaper

[–]MaddingtonBear 0 points1 point ago

No, it's not. It was a cover illustration for New York magazine from about 5 years ago.

[–]BetaMan1313 0 points1 point ago

This reminds me of just cause 2 multiplayer...

[–]mr_commodore 0 points1 point ago

REPOST.

[–]captainotto 0 points1 point ago

And they're off!!!!!

[–]mbn8807 0 points1 point ago

This fucking picture again?! reddit stahpppp!

[–]SpectreVLV 1 point2 points ago

*Hannover, and fuck you it's spelled that way on the building

[–]Vinyl_Purest 0 points1 point ago

I've seen this picture more times then I've seen your mom naked!

[–]justspeakingmymind 0 points1 point ago

So you are saying this is the first time you are seeing this picture .. ?

[–]audrywienerdog 0 points1 point ago

i can tell you that Southwest does not fly to Hanover haha

cool shot none the less. was my wallpaper for some time

[–]handsy_pilot 0 points1 point ago

Jesus Christ, this one AGAIN?

[–]malicious_swine 0 points1 point ago

If I've seen it before I downvote it, so fuckoff

[–]herlovesapony 0 points1 point ago

how the fuck did this make the front page?

[–]hellofriendo 1 point2 points ago

This is photoshopped. A dash 8 New Zealand Air and Jet Blue in Europe? Give me a break. Not to mention how the one plane is in rocket climb, the planes aren't in proper proportion, and half these planes have flaps down in landing position.

[–]opilate 0 points1 point ago

super ripped, had to sign in cause this is my new background. And thank you for this

[–]OriginalityIsDead 0 points1 point ago

"And in other news, watch out for heavy air traffic on the Hanover Expressway 101, as a massive pile-up involving an aerial fuel-craft and a 747 caused many delays and has backed up air-traffic for miles."

[–]guilalune 0 points1 point ago

why is everybody leaving ?

[–]DohRayMe 0 points1 point ago

Really great idea.

[–]sailingonward 0 points1 point ago

If this were a multiple exposure, the planes would be translucent

[–]noremac13 1 point2 points ago

[–]CakeSmasher 0 points1 point ago

Grounded for being a rebel.

[–]Brodivh -1 points0 points ago

I like how the little propeller plane looks like its trying to keep up.

[–]Trifur 0 points1 point ago

In any case, I think it is a neat photo. Even if it does appear to be a repost and photoshop.

[–]SwedishChef727 0 points1 point ago

That's a negative ghostrider, the pattern is full.
