So the teen died? With his last words being pretty much being I ain't snitching. Crazy world man.

[–]ReefaManiack42o 29 points30 points ago

It's not the first time. The mobsters shot in the Valentine's Massacre said something similar when asked who the perpetrators were.

[–]ChildActor 60 points61 points ago

"Me muddah did it"

[–]Gian_Doe 6 points7 points ago

I don't know if it's a good thing or a bad thing that I understand it more after I saw the wire.

It's still crazy but if that was the only world I'd known I could understand how someone could be brainwashed into thinking if you don't have anything left at least you still have your honor. Honor in the street code sense, not in the normal sense.

I feel bad for these kids, it's the only world they've ever known so for most of them I can't be angry. I just feel bad that they haven't been, and probably won't be, able to experience another type of life.

[–]rizwan_k 55 points56 points ago

Chicago is so fucked up right now, there's a great documentary called "The Interrupters" about a group of folks who work to avoid gun crimes in Chicago. I imagine they're working overtime right about now.

This summer needs to end, the change in weather always tends to calms things down.

[–]murdahmamurdah 33 points34 points ago

aint no love in the heart of the city

heat just make shit worse.

[–]rizwan_k 19 points20 points ago

Yeah, as soon as Chicago posts it's first 70+ weekend around May, the murder rate just skyrockets.

[–]TheRoguePractitioner 9 points10 points ago

In the hood, summer time

Is the killin' season,

It's hot out in this bitch,

an that's a good enough reason

[–]rubynibur 8 points9 points ago

This was done by the same guy who did HOOP DREAMS. Can't wait to check it out.

[–]cystical 2 points3 points ago

i watched that a while ago and forgot until now. Thanks for that. Movie had me misty eyed. If you like that, check out Waiting For Superman.

[–]TheHorseYouRodeIn 0 points1 point ago

Seriously man, I just started helping out at this organization that helps people find housing, jobs, and other help. Even the people on Section 8 and on a small amount of Social Security benefits don't want to live South Side.

[–]RelevantKanyeQuotes 194 points195 points ago

The old pastor closed the cold casket

And said the church ain’t got enough room for all the tombs

It’s a war going on outside, we ain’t safe from

I feel the pain in my city wherever I go

314 soldiers died in Iraq

509 died in Chicago

[–]Billbeachwood 49 points50 points ago

I know that people wouldn't usually rap this

but I got the facts to back this

just last year, Chicago had over 600 caskets

man, killing's some wack shit

[–]RelevantKanyeQuotes 32 points33 points ago

I woke up early this mornin' with a new state of mind

A creative way to rhyme without usin' knives and guns

Keep your nose out the sky, keep your heart to God

And keep your face to the risin' sun

[–]Mr_Brofessor 68 points69 points ago

[–]WumboJumbo 10 points11 points ago

[–]wavey54 175 points176 points ago

That and like, economic and educational opportunities and shit

[–]CurLyy[S] 33 points34 points ago

parents need to step up their game. If you raise your kids in a reckless environment they gonna grow up reckless. It all starts in the home. Fathers need to stop walking out, getting locked up, getting killed.

But after that, then kids might start to take school a little more serious, and thats how education succeeds. The hood is crazy man its an endless cycle. Someone gotta break the chain or you get stuck.

Also there's a big teacher strike going on in Chi town from what I understand. Peep this.

[–]wavey54 10 points11 points ago

Harlem Children's Zone, yo. Parenting classes (Baby College), preschool, Pre-K, three charter schools, etc.

[–]cesarjulius 24 points25 points ago

Romney will gut all that shit and more if he wins. Fuck Obama, but I'm still gonna vote for him. He talks purty and his wife got a fat ass.

[–]CurLyy[S] 14 points15 points ago

40 million is a pretty fucking big budget. I been in Harlem a lot lately, my girl lives there. I feel like the people who need this shit the most, won't take advantage of it but hopefully it does start to help.

Your vote don't matter tho, we in NY Obama is 100 here.

Only racist idiots are voting for Romney here. Ima vote for my main man Gary Johnson just cuz fuck both those goldman sachs ass drone strike dickheads. But my vote won't matter neither so Idk why I bothered bringing it up

[–]cesarjulius 35 points36 points ago

Gary Johnson won't win because too many people in America know a guy named Gary Johnson who borrowed the lawnmower and never returned it.

[–]CurLyy[S] 20 points21 points ago

Real Americans underpay Mexicans to mow their lawns.

[–]cesarjulius 11 points12 points ago

Not Gary. Fucking Gary, always trying to save a buck.

[–]CurLyy[S] 7 points8 points ago

Bumass didn't even have the decency to refill the gas tank! DAMN

[–]wavey54 1 point2 points ago

[–]cesarjulius 3 points4 points ago

See?

[–]Danielfair 15 points16 points ago

Gary Johnson will cut more of those programs bruh bruh

His only appeal is 'I smoke weed'...which is pretty appealing, but fuck dat

#obama2012

[–]CurLyy[S] 2 points3 points ago

But he'll also cut trillions of dollars on "defense" spending and cut loopholes so fucks like Shit Onmey can't rape the system. He probably would cut programs like this though so I probably picked the wrong battle.

Obviously Obama is gonna win, and thats my nigga but he's got some splainin to do.

Anyway, I'm bout to hit my limit of political posts for the day so we out don't reply lol

[–]Danielfair 12 points13 points ago

Congress ain't gonna let no defense cuts pass lol

but yeah I agree, back to dis rap game business #HUH

[–]pohatu[!] 6 points7 points ago

I could listen to you guys talk politics all day. We need more of that on the tv.

[–]criticalfreddyk 2 points3 points ago

Still no reason not to, any support for a 3rd party is good support. You're right, fuck 'em both. Best way to do that is 3rd party.

[–]lukesterc2002 1 point2 points ago

true... Usually I come through with some sociological political analysis, but I just gotta say "fuck errybody" on that one

[–]super_dilated 2 points3 points ago

parents just need to step up their game.

Personally, this is hardly the most effective way to solve this. You say it in your next sentence:

If you raise your kids in a reckless environment they gonna grow up reckless.

The parents of these child are probably the result of parents just like them. Its a vicious cycle. Trying to force parents who never really learnt to be parents to be better is a hard thing since they have learnt a life time of poor habits.

The better option, one they are hoping to bring in to my country, is to focus on the children. The government is going to supply the poorest schools with free food as many children dont have breakfast or lunch and this is major factor. They are increasing help for those with reading disabilities among other things as well

[–]CurLyy[S] 2 points3 points ago

We already have those programs here. Free Breakfast and Lunch. Its gonna take a lot more then that.

It only takes one caring parent to break the cycle.

[–]super_dilated 0 points1 point ago

I know its going to take more than that, but its going to take a lot to bring a shit parent to be a caring one.

[–]realsomalipirate 5 points6 points ago

Lupe says he is going to retire all the damn time, the nigga just loves the attention.

[–]bender445 42 points43 points ago

Lupe Fiasco's pseudo intellectual raps are for white people, they aren't fixing anything. And anyone who thinks they're making a difference because they support Lupe is fooling themselves.

I gladly accept your downvotes.

[–]aszy 54 points55 points ago

Side note: I personally don't like Lupe (although his philosophy is very close to my own) but I am going to defend him anyways, so here we go.

His raps are educating people and that is a noble cause within itself. If you want to use the sort of logic you used in this comment then it would seem that Hip-Hop doesn't fix anything and music doesn't fix anything. But it does, it gives people a voice and someone to look up to. If those people are all white, who gives a fuck? Why the hell does the color of one's skin have to have anything to do with anything? Skin color isn't a choice, it's heritage. If a ton of white people look up to Lupe, good for them! He preaches for equality, and it's good that there are people who respect him for that. It means that there are people who care. If we want to fix the ghettos, stop gang violence, and eliminate racism, we need to start with ourselves. If you think that people should stop being racist towards blacks, then stop talking about "white people" and "black people". Just stop, hating someone for hating will only make them hate more. Call them out on it. If someone is being racist, ask them why. Talk to them and try to make sense of where that hatred comes from. Then use that knowledge. Educate people, tell them how you feel, teach them to be rational.

I love hip-hop because it is different from other styles of music. It spawned from people in pain who wanted to get the word out. Yes, they were angry and violent. But how can you not be when you are actively being oppressed every day of your life? People don't seem to understand the cultural context of Hip-Hop, they seem to think that it is some sort of struggle to become the g'est g of all g's. But it's not, that's just a side effect due to it being picked up by the mainstream. Hip-Hop has always been be about telling stories, whether about fame and fortune; pain and disgrace; political beliefs; or simply just for the fun of it. It was created by people who had nothing but still had the determination to create.

People who like Lupe are making a difference. They are getting the word out about the issues at hand. People who like rap are making a difference because rap is just words, and words are easy to share. And if those words are meaningful, then they are worth sharing because maybe they might just change someone's mind. This fighting about who is the best rapper and who sucks and who doesn't is spawned by ignorant younglings. It isn't about who's the best. Sure it's fun to talk about and some musicians are obviously better than others. But all of that doesn't matter when it comes to what this community is about, and this community is about letting people know that they need to pay attention to the world around them. Shit ain't perfect and shit ain't equal, and as long as we have the means to make it better we should use those means. If the evil white people are listening to rap now then GOOD. Now maybe they'll finally listen to the words.

Edit: P.S. Sorry for the long post, I just couldn't stand this comment (no offense to the op) and how many upvotes it was getting. It really shows how much the community has shifted away from its roots.

[–]bender445 16 points17 points ago

I see how much my comment made you think and feel, and I would love to encourage more of a dialogue (partialy in an effort to show that I am not some racist monster, but that I actually had a point I was trying to make with this comment, which your reply, I think, demonstrates).

You talked a lot in your response about racism, and I understand the glibness of my phrasing "white people" is the cause of that, but I phrased it that way for a reason (see also the other comment I left on this thread.) You also talk a lot about community. I submit that Lupe's audience and the kid in the picture OP posted, his associates, and everyone else living in Englewood, are different groups. They may both like hip-hop, but they are not part of the same community. There is no dialogue between these communities. In fact, the ghettos in Chicago are extremely isolated, socially. (See the documentary "The Interupters" or the NPR piece ((book it inspired, etc.)) "Our America: Life and Death on the South Side of Chicago.")

I then submit that only an artist that appeals to the other part of the hip-hop community. Some one who's stories, pain, political beliefs or fun (to borrow your phrasing) are similar to the members of that part of the community. Lupe Fiasco does not.

I am not saying anyone is worse for being a fan of Lupe's, or that I wasn't geeked when I first learned of him, nor am I saying that it wouldn't be awesome if his brand of hip-hop caught on more in areas that could use thoughtfulness. I'm saying that it doesn't.

And there are a lot of folks that don't live in those ghettos that think listening to Lupe means that they are enlightened to the strife of these people, that sharing his music with their friends and spreading it around will eventually pay it forward to some how fix what's going on. The truth is, it just won't extend that far. The violence and isolation is beyond words.

[–]aszy 11 points12 points ago

Oh shit man, I didn't mean to outline you as a racist monster. I try not to do that to anyone unless... well... they are lol.

I'm really sorry that I made that mistake. It just seemed as though your comment had different intentions then you explained just now.

Also, it was a mistake on my part to use the word "community". I meant to use it to refer to the entire partaking group but did not think about the fact that I implied that the group was working together in some way, which is highly incorrect as many know. The sound of the genre definitely varies heavily based on region (as well as other factors: income, country, language, etc.), more so that can be said about other genres.

I also did not mean to suggest that the spread of this type of music will solve everything. In fact, it probably will solve nothing. However, it is the awareness of the issues brought up in the lyrics that have a large influence on people's beliefs and values. The awareness it what makes people want to help. The thing is, most people aren't aware of these issues and I think hip-hop has definitely helped the cause. But obviously just making music doesn't fix anything, but it gives people a voice that they might not have otherwise (the poor population as you know is the most underrepresented demographic in America and is commonly so in most countries).

Anyways, just be careful how you refer to race or angry egalitarian people like me will come and burn you to the stake even if you didn't mean it >:) lol jk, It was a simple misunderstanding and I'm sorry I attacked you.

Peace, I'm out. Hopefully we will all be able to help in solving the terrible shit that's going on in low-income communities :/

[–]bender445 8 points9 points ago

Peace homie... and seriously, no offense taken or anything

[–]shawarman 8 points9 points ago

Hooray for everybody!

[–]Gian_Doe 0 points1 point ago

I think for the most part your comment is spot on. But the one tiny part I think you're missing is there are no absolutes with something like this. You can't say it touches nobody in that situation. It's fair to point out the effect it has is minuscule at best and it's short sighted to suggest Lupe makes any real tide changing difference in the areas which need it. But if it has an affect on just one kid, one single solitary kid, it was worth it. One thing I've learned in my old age is that I don't know a lot of stuff - most things really, the other thing I've learned is never use absolutes when talking about human behavior in extremely large sample sizes.

This comment might come off like I'm mincing words and ignoring the big picture, but keep in mind change doesn't happen over night. It has to start somewhere and many of the catalysts for change happen in small ways at first and never get credit. Now we could say those things are worthless because it's like pissing into a forest fire, but slowly every little bit helps. The only real thing which causes change is time, time setting an example and providing new avenues and outlets for those new minds to discover when they're growing. One thing I do know for certain is having those options available is a lot better than throwing your hands up and saying it absolutely makes no difference.

[–]Womjack 1 point2 points ago

Great comment. This is something I have tried to discuss with people many times. The modern force of commercial hip hop has really obliterated its roots.

One thing I would slightly disagree on...disagree is probably too strong.....anyway.... A lot of original hip hop was the exact opposite of angry and violent. It was happy, fun and even ridiculous in a very calculated way, to act as an opposing force to the everyday violence etc - an escape. The social commentary was even pretty much absent at first, it was just pure entertainment made by people who felt nothing else in society was really made with them in mind.

[–]dirtygerman55 1 point2 points ago

I work with news. If I made your words into a feature, I would use the sentence " It was created by people who had nothing but still had the determination to create," as a pulled quote.

[–]dancon25 5 points6 points ago

I'm kinda new around here, but this comment's kinda confusing. What makes Lupe for white people? And do people often think they make differences in people's lives based on whose albums they buy?

[–]Electricladyland24 0 points1 point ago

Lupe is for white people... Please explain your ignorant logic.

[–]bender445 11 points12 points ago

He hung out at the skate park on Wilson with knee pads and elbow pads and helmet, not on the corner in Englewood or wherever. Whether or not kids can bump the beats he's flowing over is not the question, but, for once, what he's talking about is what's important. Look at OP's link... do you think that kid listens to Lupe or Gucci Mane? And why? If trappin is all you know then trappin is all that's gonna make sense. Your mind won't be open to new messages until your real situation changes. Therefore, only people in comfortable enough situations, i.e. people who aren't in the ghetto, like Lupe. It isn't fair to say only white people don't live in ghettos, but only non-whites live in ghettos here, hence the phrasing. Also, Lasers was weak.

[–]CurLyy[S] 5 points6 points ago

Lupe is for educated people. Educated people are generally white males.

its not really ignorant

[–]Electricladyland24 20 points21 points ago

Ok my bad I completely understand what you mean. I still think there are plenty educated/aware minorities that can understand what lupe preaches. Lupe doesn't make music for white people.. Just anyone smart enough to listen.

[–]shun-16 15 points16 points ago

And therein lies the problem. Economic issues aside, the attitude that being smart is akin to being white and if you're black you don't want to be smart you'd rather be ignorant. People fail to realize they can bump Lupe and Chief Keef.

[–]Danielfair 1 point2 points ago

Chief Keef better tho #300

[–]landshark9 0 points1 point ago

being black doesnt inherently make you 'not want to be smart', but being smart rarely gets you anywhere if you live in the ghetto, and black people live in the ghetto.

[–]CurLyy[S] 2 points3 points ago

I was kinda joking, obviously Lupe is for white people. No down votes here.

[–]bender445 1 point2 points ago

Good, maybe I took it out of context. It was the top comment, so I was making sure, I guess.

[–]2WAR -3 points-2 points ago

he is for white college kids

[–]Danielfair -1 points0 points ago

him and immortal technique are their prophets

[–]ReefaManiack42o 8 points9 points ago

Ahhh, omerta. It's good to see.

[–]supferrets 3 points4 points ago

Whoever appeals to the law against his fellow man is either a fool or a coward. Whoever cannot take care of himself without the law is both. It is as cowardly to betray an offender to justice, even though his offences be against yourself, as it is not to avenge an injury by violence. It is dastardly and contemptible in a wounded man to betray the name of his assailant, because if he recovers, he must naturally expect to take vengeance himself.

[–]urankabashi 4 points5 points ago

I live in the murder capital where people murder for capital. This is not the way of life for any human being. I wish the music that is coming out of Chicago will aid in our struggle to fight this disease, not promote it.

We need a change of culture. We need to be aware. Peace yall.

[–]TheSource88 2 points3 points ago

This story is nearly a year old, don't know why reddit is so all over it today.

[–]CurLyy[S] 4 points5 points ago

cuz this summer was just as bad, actually it was worse.

http://chicagoist.com/2012/08/21/saturday_murders_in_chicago_tie_201.php

[–]TheSource88 1 point2 points ago

I know, I'm from North Austin. I just don't get why this picture has showed up twice when this story was last year.

[–]CurLyy[S] 9 points10 points ago

Well its been in the news a lot and thats a pretty crazy frontpage article. Reddit is all about timing so.

[–]pohatu[!] 3 points4 points ago

http://www.pulitzer.org/archives/9165

This gives it all a lot more context.

[–]hashketchum 1 point2 points ago

Tragic but the man has honor. Pour out a forty and may he rest in peace.

[–]cesarjulius 10 points11 points ago

Hmmm... let's see. 40 killings in a weekend, 40 killings in a week. By that math, Chicago went an entire work week without any killings. Great job, Chicago! Real life weekend warriors!

[–]CamouflageDave 12 points13 points ago

Weekday - Grind a 9 to 5

Weekend - Find a 9 to fire

[–]cesarjulius 2 points3 points ago

That's, like, a hit, man.

[–]so_dested 2 points3 points ago

I live in Chicago, this city is fucked right now. I found a guy shot up laying in the street earlier in the summer, he died a few hours after I called 911. My car got shot a week ago. I have been awoken countless times by gun fights. I don't even...

[–]HalfBlackKid 4 points5 points ago

That shit gay

...But for real, that must be one fucked up place. Dude gets shot and he has to much respect to let his killer get caught. I'm more surprised that he thought ratting was the worst he could do on his death bed than him actually dying.

[–]pohatu[!] 22 points23 points ago

It's not like some serial killer came and killed him while he was jogging along the river and we need to get the serial killer off the streets before he can harm again.

It's more likely he's a casualty in an ongoing battle between two (or more) groups and snitching will do more harm to his group than police catching his shooter will do good for his group.

[–]HalfBlackKid 1 point2 points ago

I mean, I couldn't imagine not wanting revenge as I'm about to die.

I really don't get it. I mean I do but, I don't get how his emotions didn't get the best of him. That's some control right there.

[–]pohatu[!] 7 points8 points ago

I hear you. I posted this elsewhere http://www.pulitzer.org/archives/9165

After reading that, it's not just a G-Code, it's that these victims have no faith in the legal system whatsoever, so it doesn't matter anyway. It'd be like if representatives from a religion you had no faith in - pick one, like that one where they thought they were going to become aliens in y2k - came to you and asked who shot you so they could pray to their imaginary alien god for their souls. I don't know. I'm fortunate enough to live in a place and in a part of society where most of the time I can think the cops/court/jury would be on my side. It's clearly not like that in the real world for people who get shot in Chicago.

[–]RidinTheMonster 4 points5 points ago

He'd probably prefer the knowledge that his boys will be the ones getting revenge, not the cops.

Why is this in HHH?

[–]drawmeasheep 0 points1 point ago

There's been a lot of noise recently with Lupe and Chief Keef and violence in Chicago.

[–]downtothegwound 1 point2 points ago

Ok, but i don't think all this violence is stemming from Hip Hop...

[–]SgtMeowenstien -1 points0 points ago

Just want to point out that this is a two year old paper headline. Rahm's not mayor yet, and Maggie Daley's still alive.

[–]dienaked 0 points1 point ago

who shot ya

[–]ggk1 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand why this is in HHH? Is it the biggie reference "who shot ya"?

[–]milltimes -1 points0 points ago

On a lighter note, let's all enjoy Chief Keef's Grandma ruining his street cred

[–]fuzzy_dunnlopMR THANKSGIVING 4 points5 points ago

Yeah, like grams is going to say anything bad about her grandson. gtfo.

[–]milltimes -1 points0 points ago

And where's this gang at? In my kitchen? In my basement? Where they at? In my refrigerator where he go all the time?

...yeah

[–]fuzzy_dunnlopMR THANKSGIVING 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, like grams is going to say anything bad about her grandson.

...yeah. No granny is going to speak ill on their grandson. As if he ever spends time their in the first place after his house arrest. Nice try though. Now go to some rick ross threads and scream LOL OFFICER ROSS LOL AMIRITE for some sweet neckbear karma you dork.

[–]osj777HHH's Lead Candidate for Best Simplifier Award 2 points3 points ago

i'll introduce you to my grandma one day

[–]thenamesbootsy -1 points0 points ago

I'm not quite sure this belongs in r/hiphopheads. Yea, it can be sort of related but really it has nothing to do with hip hop.

[–]LazySamurai 7 points8 points ago

This has everything to do with hip hop.

[–]urankabashi 0 points1 point ago

So true, people underestimate the power and influence of music. Use it to heal not degrade...

[–]cind3r 1 point2 points ago

the title does

[–]thenamesbootsy -1 points0 points ago

I take back everything I said, then.

[–]Wtfloki -3 points-2 points ago

Rule 1 of the Negro Code: No snitching.

[–]urankabashi 1 point2 points ago

That is a myth that you choose to propagate with racist diction. Please refrain...

[–]Wtfloki 6 points7 points ago

Well shit I'm sorry for quoting the Boondocks. Jeez

[–]urankabashi 3 points4 points ago

LOL thats a funny episode. I reacted like that because that quote is totally out of context. And when it stands alone, its message is not as clear as it is on the actual show. ya feel me?

[–]Wtfloki 1 point2 points ago

Yeah man it's all good. I prolly should've quoted it or something to let y'all know.
