I'll make the same comment I made when this was posted yesterday.

[–]pilvy 4 points5 points ago

I didn't see yesterdays but I would have said;

This gif is the cutest/saddest one for me

Backstory: His brother was telling him Santa isn't real.

[–]Gatord35 -4 points-3 points ago

the gif alone is hilarious....but add the title,,, AHAHAHA

[–]CautiousTaco 20 points21 points ago

That asynchronous eye movement is really hard to stop noticing though

[–]SchrodingerE 3 points4 points ago

This is exactly what I came to comment on. Thank you for validating my weirdness.

[–]Maple_D 5 points6 points ago

You have a very low sad and cute threshold

[–]mattc286 21 points22 points ago

FALSE! The moon is tidally locked with the earth and therefore always faces its same side to the earth.

[–]Torpluss 33 points34 points ago

Also, the earth doesn't have a face, just let this one slide, it's a just a cute little GIF.

[–]imgonnawin 6 points7 points ago

Well, the eye is in Africa, so it's not as if anyone would notice.

[–]xrelaht 3 points4 points ago

Also, the Earth rotates around its own axis faster than the moon orbits the Earth.

[–]BinnocentEyestander 1 point2 points ago

yes

[–]Torpluss 1 point2 points ago

Yes?

[–]JohnAbruzzi 3 points4 points ago

No?

[–]matingslinkys 4 points5 points ago

Only if you buy me dinner first.

[–]TobiasCB 1 point2 points ago

Maybe?

[–]CheshireSwift 2 points3 points ago

I don't know?

[–]deathlordoo 0 points1 point ago

Can you repeat the question?

[–]BinnocentEyestander 0 points1 point ago

Si, Oui, Ja, Da

[–]bl4ckb4dg3r5 0 points1 point ago

That's not true. We can only ever see one side of the moon-- the side illuminated by the sun. The dark side of the moon does face the earth. We only ever observe one face because as others have noted the rotation takes as long as the revolution-- that's what tidal locking does.

Here's a video that demonstrates.

[–]onemoreclick 0 points1 point ago

You basically just repeated what mattc286 said but using different words and adding a link.

[–]bl4ckb4dg3r5 0 points1 point ago

I disagree.

[–]JdaveA 0 points1 point ago

Does that mean half the world doesn't see the moon?

[–]mattc286 2 points3 points ago

No, it means here on Earth we only ever see one side of the moon.

[–]onemoreclick 0 points1 point ago

But you are saying the only false in this gif is the moon isn't rotating?because it seems like you were saying the Earth face would only see the moon for half an orbit is false.

The no rotating moon seems a small error to yell false to everyone.

[–]Siggy778 0 points1 point ago

Upvote for something very few people know.

[–]celticmagnum 4 points5 points ago

I want to see a version where the moon also has eyes and it gets happy when it sees the earth

[–]thorofasgard 1 point2 points ago

Well that wouldn't work. Either the Moon would always see the Earth or never see it based on the fact that the Moon is tidally locked to the Earth, always showing the same face to it.

[–]onemoreclick 0 points1 point ago

It would suck if the moon could only slightly see earth out the corner of its eye, forever.

[–]rconnelly20 0 points1 point ago

Arent they both rotating?

[–]Swoax 2 points3 points ago

no earth rotates, moon is locked in position

[–]HipHopAnonymous23 6 points7 points ago

False. The moon also rotates, but it does so at the same rate as it orbits. Therefore, from an observer's point of view on Earth, the same side always faces them.

[–]Swoax 0 points1 point ago

ah i see, good to know :) now im going to sleep

[–]rconnelly20 0 points1 point ago

Oh

[–]simpat1zq 0 points1 point ago

You would have to watch this gif for about 50 lifetimes in order to get a feel for how many times the moon has actually been around the Earth.

[–]ErmBern 0 points1 point ago

Actually it's about 22 lifetimes assuming the gif is 1 revolution per second, the earth's age is 4.54 billions years and the average life span of an american is 78.2 years. I suppose if you were from some not-so-well-to-do country in Africa it could require 50.

[–]simpat1zq 0 points1 point ago

If you watch it, it clearly takes longer than a second, and it's more like 2 seconds.

And...I just used a stop watch. It's pretty much 2 seconds.

[–]ErmBern 0 points1 point ago

I get 1.5s exactly on my stop watch 10 times in a row. I'm satisfied that it's 1.5 and we were both off.

[–]Xebsis 0 points1 point ago

source? looks like the style of a deviantartist I know

[–]motor_boating_SOB 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of waiting for the weekend...up and there it goes

Geek comment: object permanence. Back to the books now, bye ;)

[–]SchrodingerE 0 points1 point ago

Hey is not sad that the object doesn't exist... he is sad that it's not in view. If you got sad when your gf/bf wasn't around, it wouldn't be because you think they don't exist... it's simply because you miss them.

[–]cptrooster 0 points1 point ago

Exactly ... that's why object permanence is all about early-childhood development. It's why the peek-a-boo game works with babies. They think you really left.

[–]SchrodingerE 0 points1 point ago

No... how are you not understanding what I said?

Object permanence = knowing if an object EXISTS after it is gone.

Baby not having object permanence means they don't think something continues to EXIST after it's not in view. The baby does NOT simply MISS the mother... the baby thinks the Mother does NOT EXIST.

This GIF is not about that. It's a planet (that somehow has conciousness) and MISSES the moon. If perchance the planet did think the moon did not exist ... it would be crying and really upset, or aghast.

With that said this is a stupid gif and neither of us knows what the planet is really thinking without some further experimentation and/or neural imaging.

[–]cptrooster 0 points1 point ago

You must be like Socrates or something, like a real philosopher. The critical thinking it took for your to explain that may have just drained the eternal source of knowledge. Wow.

[–]cptrooster 0 points1 point ago

But seriously ... I know who are overdoing this; however, isn't the peek-a-boo game all about teaching object permanence?

[–]SchrodingerE 1 point2 points ago

I would say that the "peek a boo" game doesn't actually teach object permanence rather simply exploit it for amusement. There is a school of thought that believes that we are simply born with everything it takes to learn object permanence and as we grow older it sort of just occurs. Sort of like the idea of AMPA/NMDA receptor ratio increasing after a certain age in neurons that facilitate LTP and hence learning, we are perhaps simply neurologically incapable of object permanence because of lack of connection between certain group(s) of neurons and once it happens the child "learns" object permanence.

I personally really doubt, something as critical to our sanity as object permanence is going to be left up to nurturing. Think of the ramifications of a few neglected "cave infants" and how that would seriously affect the human race today.

[–]cptrooster 0 points1 point ago

Well put ... I think you may actually be related to Piaget.

[–]SchrodingerE 0 points1 point ago

I can't tell if you are being sarcastically condescending or genuine, but either way this is all first year neuro/psych.

[–]cptrooster 0 points1 point ago

Not condescending at all. I'm impressed. It's what I was studying when I saw this silly little Gif. I was just trying to have a laugh, not discuss developmental learning theory. I don't come to Reddit unless I want to laugh and laugh along with others. I meant no harm at all, just a laugh.

[–]Axolotile 1 point2 points ago

Reminds me of Putt Putt.

[–]28deadbeats 0 points1 point ago

Don't be sad earth! He's right there! He keeps coming back, earth! Stahp being so sad :(

[–]Rosuko1214 0 points1 point ago

Seems very Ristar-ish to me.

[–]Jeffreymark 0 points1 point ago

Why does Earth have a black eye?

[–]SuperTurtle 0 points1 point ago

This is the saddest gif you've seen? Jeez you live in a wonderful world

[–]clydefrog811 -1 points0 points ago

This gif is so wrong it makes me want to shove the moon up someones ass. First off, the earth isn't spinning at all, everyone should know this. Secondly, the moon is in synchronous rotation, meaning the same side of the moon is facing the earth at the same time. Lastly, its neither funny or sad. Jesus op, don't be such a fag.

[–]ItsDare 0 points1 point ago

*Gayest and gayest FTFY

[–]pilleee 0 points1 point ago

Immediately thought of this

[–]DasLandshark -1 points0 points ago

+1 for perfect loop

[–]coljoo 0 points1 point ago

It weirds me out that the Earth's eyes move independently from each other.

[–]lasrith -2 points-1 points ago

Schrodinger's GIF.
