Legs: Johnny Tightlips, where'd they hit ya?

Johnny Tightlips: I ain't sayin' nothin'.

Legs: But what'll I tell the doctor?

Johnny Tightlips: Tell him to suck a lemon

[–]Jymotion 287 points288 points ago

Johnny Tightlips, do you see the shoota?

I see a lot of things...

[–]VolatileChemical 77 points78 points ago

Y'know you could be a little more helpful.

[–]moocow102 24 points25 points ago

How's your mother? Whoa, who said I had a mother?

[–]Oogity_Boogity_Boo 6 points7 points ago

I try and use this in real life as much as I possibly can. One of my favorite moments from all of The Simpsons for some reason.

[–][deleted] 55 points56 points ago

ha! that's what I thought of immediately too...the character and the scene were modeled after Frank Gusenberg:

When police arrived at the scene, Frank Gusenberg, despite having twenty-two wounds by fourteen bullets, was the only victim still alive. He was taken to the Alexian Brothers hospital in Chicago, Illinois. When asked "Who shot you?" Frank replied, "Nobody shot me," ruining the opportunity to bring the murderers to justice.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Gusenberg#Final_days

reading [edit: other threads], i now understand this isn't just out of stubborness (stubbornity?) but because the rival gang will punish others for the dying guy's snitch.

[–]Inops 62 points63 points ago

What if it was a guy named Nobody? Maybe his shooter was well-versed in Greek literature and took a page from Odysseus's book.

[–]Genosyddal 8 points9 points ago

Ahhhh No'body is hurting me!

Then what are you complaining about?

[–]drecha 28 points29 points ago

This was my first thought.

[–]ShezUK 146 points147 points ago

I think he's still one-upped by Frank Gusenberg:

... two other men (with civilian clothes) entered the room with machine guns and... opened fire on the seven men, pounding 70 bullets into them in what would become known as the St. Valentine's Day Massacre. When police arrived at the scene, Frank Gusenberg, despite having twenty-two wounds by fourteen bullets, was the only victim still alive... When asked "Who shot you?" Frank replied, "Nobody shot me".

[–]PenisBlood 65 points66 points ago

Now THAT'S some hardcore gangster shit.

[–]CardCounter0 3 points4 points ago

Actually the version I heard was:

When asked "Who shot you?" Frank replied, "Your Mother".

[–]obotray 404 points405 points ago

My uncle was a chicago ER surgeon, told me stories of gang related injuries. Said they'd stitch em up / send em out and like clockwork a rival member would show up within an hour from some payback move.

[–]MCkizzel35 308 points309 points ago

Snitches get stitches

[–]Buck_Naykid 183 points184 points ago

And six foot ditches

[–]Gonzephus 36 points37 points ago

[–]rosie_theredditor 37 points38 points ago

With knotted-up britches?

[–]Genosyddal 41 points42 points ago

With low-sagging britches.

FTFY

[–]Maverick814 6 points7 points ago

This is great news. I've been meaning to get some ditches dug so I'll make sure to bring some snitches around. Six feet is a little deep though.

[–]allday0212 40 points41 points ago

cuz they're punk ass bitches

[–]unicornon 42 points43 points ago

there's money to be made working as a security guard for hospitals in big cities. need someone to make sure no one murders people in the ER.

[–]Achalemoipas 99 points100 points ago

Hundreds of dollars per year!

Security guards are very poorly paid.

[–]unicornon 16 points17 points ago

not if you work through contractors for private hospitals.

[–]jalopenohandjob 26 points27 points ago

I was contracted security for a hospital. It paid 10 bucks an hour. In my city, there is only one company who does contracted security, and the pay is the same across the board.

[–]mik3 4 points5 points ago

Holy shit that sucks humongous insane balls.

I got paid $12 starting to sit on my ass in a gatehouse letting people into a condo complex... listen to radio, play games/surf on phone, etc. 0 stress.

This is in Toronto.

[–]jalopenohandjob 5 points6 points ago

considering we were in charge of property lock ups, restraints, patient watches, body collection, on top of access control, yea, it does.

[–]gentled 6 points7 points ago

Do private hospitals get many patients from gangs?

[–]turkturkleton 10 points11 points ago

Wonder if there are any doctors who've been bought off to make sure some people die. I keep seeing commercials for a show about that - this woman's a doctor and her family's in debt to the mob, so she fixes their guys up and gets forced into making sure other guys don't get fixed up. Or something.

[–]PlanetY 2 points3 points ago

The show is called the mob doctor.. Actually pretty good, but I doubt it happens in real life

[–]GreyHavens 49 points50 points ago

There's your medicaid dollars hard at work people.

[–]shallow- 40 points41 points ago

I know right, they wouldn't be shooting each other so much if we didn't keep fixing them for free.

[–]aaaaaaaarrrrrgh 36 points37 points ago

Actually, not fixing them would probably significantly reduce the number of gang members. Unethical, but effective.

[–]gatz 74 points75 points ago

This demonstrates such an utter lack of understanding of social issues that I don't even know where to start

[–]KingJulien 24 points25 points ago

As a black guy from NYC, the whole "Stop Snitching" movement has always bothered me. These kids don't even know what snitching is, but they stand by this idea anyway. Real snitching is when you and someone else are both criminals, then you get caught and then rat out the other criminal. People seem to think that getting cops involved in any way is snitching.

If someone killed/raped your mother/sister/daughter, and you new who it was, and you told the cops, does that make you a snitch or someone that cares about the well-being of your family?

Shit is ridiculous.

**People were wondering why i mentioned I was black: Well mainly because the whole Stop Snitching Movement is mainly lead by black Americans from the hood.

[–]HighFiveYourFace 33 points34 points ago

Baltimore is different as are a lot of other places. You don't have to be a criminal to be a snitch.

As a white guy in NYC, I have never understood this either.

[–]oryano 69 points70 points ago

As a person from a place, and I haven't wrapped my head around it either.

[–]raidonbluntz 24 points25 points ago

NYC has changed. it's not like it was in the 80s and 90s anymore, but anyone associated with any criminal activity doesn't want any association with the cops. It gives you a bad image. Just like the wise Biggie Smalls once said, "Number nine, shoulda been number one to me If you ain't gettin' bagged stay the fuck from police If niggas think you snitchin' they ain't tryin' listen They be sittin' in your kitchen, waitin' to start hittin'"

And that's how life goes for the hardened criminal no matter on where they reside.

[–]Burkett 11 points12 points ago

I grew up with the phrase "tattling is getting someone in trouble and telling is getting someone out of trouble."

[–]Horsecock_Johnson 8 points9 points ago

I remember some interview where they asked "If Osama bin Laden was living next door to you, would you say anything?" The answer, of course, was "No".

[–][deleted] 1706 points1707 points ago

If your life revolves around a certain group of people or way of life, like a gang, where the police have always been against you...why would you give up information to them in your dying moments? Most likely your family, friends, fellow gang members would not only have to deal with harassment from whoever it was that you gave up, but might also be implicated by your information. He's not thinking of just himself because he's dying anyway, he's staying true to the values he's lived by his whole life.

[–]zoey732 264 points265 points ago

I think people ITT are underestimating the snitch culture and how it runs deep in gang life. Perhaps he has more to lose by "snitching" than by keeping silent and letting the police or "streets" handle it.

He might be thinking of family members and close friends and their safety. Sad, but I think he has more at stake than just being labeled a snitch.

[–]Zimbardo 66 points67 points ago

A snitch, dead or alive, is always a call for heavy-handed retribution. It really doesn't matter if it hits the snitch or those around him.

[–]Chronic_BOOM 211 points212 points ago

[–]Zimbardo 11 points12 points ago

The kind that runs a meth ring out of his chicken restaurant and doesn't want to raise suspicion?

[–]Armpit-Vagina 108 points109 points ago

People in these threads usually don't understand gang culture or what it's like to be an inner city cop. My brother is a cop in Chicago, and he deals with these people on a daily basis. Nobody tells the authorities anything. They are essentially on their own every day in these neighborhoods, surrounded by a thick atmosphere of violence, insults and disrespect from people who hate the law and think they are above it. Police work is frustrating. It takes a lot of guts to do what these guys do.

Gangs fight dirty, Chicago gangs especially. Gangs outnumber police 10 to 1 here. Cops have no choice but to fight dirty back. This is the reality of the streets.

EDIT: fixed typos

[–]losercantdance 194 points195 points ago

cops have no choice but to fight dirty back

doesn't stooping to the level of the murderers and thieves the cops are fighting against justify the gangs' communities' hate and judgement that all police are corrupt, and perpetuate the cycle of animosity and violence?

[–]BasedDizz 45 points46 points ago

its a vicious cycle

[–]teacoopz 29 points30 points ago

This is the kind of shit people in power in Chicago spew to justify their back-handed nature, politicians and police officers alike. It's kind of how Obama said he was going to take Super PAC money after speaking out against them: if his opponent was going to be doing it, him not doing it would put him at a great disadvantage.

If your political opponents are going to cheat, you have to cheat. It's game theory, I guess.

[–]Melkor765 83 points84 points ago

I think it's worth noting that the police largely started this air of hostility in the late 50s...People in poor areas tend to hate the police for good historical reasons. Excellent source on this if you have netflix: "Crips and Bloods: Made in America"

[–]BarackisKing 1 point2 points ago

Except the people who dealt with that are not the ones today shouting fuck the police.

[–]zentenai 21 points22 points ago

What kind of man talks to the DEA? No man.

[–]juloxx 6 points7 points ago

a bitch. The DEA are the worst kind of people in the world. At least Cartels dont try and paint themselfs as good guys

[–]wolfvision 362 points363 points ago

That's pretty eerie when you think about it. Someone just shot you, you're about to die, and you don't even want revenge... crazy.

[–]Lettuce_Get_Weird 1341 points1342 points ago

[–]gj45 69 points70 points ago

Hey, maybe he wasn't in one :O!

[–]thefuckdude 53 points54 points ago

... not in a gang? how is that even possible?

[–]cesarjulius 60 points61 points ago

I'm a 34-year-old whiteman, and I think I'm in a gang. Not on purpose though. I teach high school in Brooklyn and accidentally a crip. I didn't know how things worked, brought a whole bunch of cupcakes to my initiation, and they liked them so much they decided not to jump me in. I kind of wish they did though, because now I have to bring cupcakes EVERY FUCKING TIME. When will these miscreants learn that not all white people are made of cupcakes?

[–]staplesgowhere 34 points35 points ago

Did you accidentally the whole crip?

[–]leshy01 11 points12 points ago

For the record I don't know anyone made of cupcakes. White or any color.

[–]braised_diaper_shit 71 points72 points ago

Dude, he isn't telling the police because he wants revenge.

[–]DamnJester 31 points32 points ago

Exactly this. The police will only get in the way. They will either arrest the guy, thereby eliminating the opportunity for revenge, or accidentally catch the victims gang brothers in the act of said revenge.

A lot of people say "No way. That would never happen. If you are dying you would tell the police who shot you." It wouldn't happen in YOUR reality. Remember, though, there are infinite realities.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

Jesus, someone always has to drag particle physics into these discussions, don't they?

[–]Aaronmcom 43 points44 points ago

his version of "I ain't even mad"

[–]bastian1343 9 points10 points ago

He gets revenge.

He just doesn't need the police to get it.

[–]Zapatista77 17 points18 points ago

Not about "not wanting revenge", oh revenge will be attempted, but in their own way.

Talking to cops is just a big giant "no no", simple as that. Plus murders in the hood go unsolved everyday, there's not a lot of confidence that cops even care to "make it right", so they insist on doing that themselves.

[–]live3orfry 59 points60 points ago

The Chicago police are just another street gang. No reason to tell them anything.

[–]sitakibukaki 2 points3 points ago

Thank you for articulating what I was thinking.

[–]HarkonnenThug 11 points12 points ago

A man must have a code.

[–]AllShookOut 119 points120 points ago

This happens everywhere, all around the world. There are whole communities, usually in poor areas, where no-one will talk to the police, not everyone there will be involved in crime at all. I live in the UK and it is common in many cities over here too.

Just look at the police arrest of Christopher Coke in Jamaica where a whole community took to arms to defend a drug dealer. Do you think that everyone there bought from him? Or just that he helped more local people out than the police ever did.

[–]effedup 76 points77 points ago

In my neighbourhood watch program, we watch out for the po-lice.

[–]Frankeh 70 points71 points ago

Shieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

[–]Lillipout 456 points457 points ago

The reason is simple. If the cops get the shooter first, then his fellow gang members won't get their chance at revenge.

[–]Synically 346 points347 points ago

I think the reason is deeper than that. I personally know someone who did 8 years because he'd not tell on someone. Not talking to the police is a point of pride in some cultures.

[–]Z0idberg_MD 35 points36 points ago

No, there are definitely pockets of culture that are opposed to "snitching". I know several sweet elderly Jamaican ladies who still talk about "not snitching". They aren't even talking about gang activity, but basic things that someone does wrong.

They really think it's a virtue. They think it makes them a good person by not telling the authorities.

[–]rx_tacos 23 points24 points ago

Yeah, but it stems from criminal activity. Jamaica has one of the highest murder rates in the world.

[–]disposable_me_0001 4 points5 points ago

so... if you tell your gang buddies, and they get revenge, isn't that also a form of snitching, just to a different set of people?

[–]bouchard 3 points4 points ago

It's like when your brother punches you when you're eight and when you run to an adult in a position of authority the only response is "no one likes a tattle tale".

[–]circuit_icon 13 points14 points ago

Either that, or he's trying to protect his family.

[–]spundnix32 11 points12 points ago

And revenge would mean death. If the cops found his killer, he would be arrested, tried, and then probably sentenced 25 years to life in prison.

[–]rumentrocar 11 points12 points ago

Back when I was a paramedic, I had a patient that was shot four times: three in the abdomen and one in the upper abdomen/low chest. I was pretty new at that time, and after we got him loaded in the ambulance and on the way to the hospital, I started asking him normal questions like "are you having trouble breathing?" and "do you have belly pain?" and "what's your name?". He refused to answer them. Honestly, I could have cared less about who shot him or what his name was (mainly needed it for the records), but his refusal to tell me if he was short of breath or had massive belly pain reduced my ability to treat him. The guy could have been dying from a pneumothorax or other problem that I could have fixed or treated if he would have talked to me, but he chose to keep his mouth shut. FWIW, he turned out to be fine.

On the other hand, I've had to tell shot/stabbed/beaten gang members to shut up and stop looking like a bitch in front of the TV cameras and photogs and that if they kept screaming revenge on Lil' Trey or whoever, they were probably going to get themselves in trouble.

[–]effedup 22 points23 points ago

Really? Only in Chicago? ...

[–]MPair-E 4 points5 points ago

Not just in Chicago, but Chicago seems to be the best at it.

[–]Khal_Drogo 6 points7 points ago

The 'G' code is strong in Chicago.

[–]hate_is_beautiful 7 points8 points ago

G-Code is an amazing song and I think does a good job of illuminating how important this concept is to gang culture.

Well, at least he gets to go to gangsta heaven...

[–]jittwoii 25 points26 points ago

You could say he will be living in a

Gangsters paradise...

[–]Ghett0blasterX 2 points3 points ago

Ain't no heaven for a gangsta, I think you'll find he goes to Thugs' Mansion

[–]H-Resin 15 points16 points ago

No, not only in Chicago. Try in every predominantly black ghetto in the United States, if not moreover the world. But particularly I'm referencing the no-snitching culture.

A lot of people here are rationalizing this by coming up with some sort of philosophy that police are always against you, or that gang members want their revenge...and yeah. That may be true on a deeper level. But the surface truth is that this is the culture and environment these kids grew up in, and their mentality is: if somebody kills me, nobody's gonna snitch on that guy. So why should I snitch on this dude because he killed someone? It's kind of circular reasoning, but it's the way of life on the streets.

If anybody hasn't watched Lous Theroux's documentary on the Kenzington neighborhood in Philly, I'd highly recommend it. Lots of good insights.

Chi-City Mayne.

[–]bobsp 7 points8 points ago

If he had said who it was, he'd be endangering his friends and family.

[–]Fudgefactor7 32 points33 points ago

That's not just a Chicago thing. Where I'm from, that mentality is endemic. It works like this: Something happens, the cops show up, questions are asked, and nobody says anything because "we handle our own around here," so the cops, frustrated, leave, then the people who could have stepped up to the plate and offered up any info they had will then complain that the cops don't help them.

It's retarded, is what it is. Look, if you don't help the cops, they cannot help you, and if you consider keeping your trap shut as the right thing to do, then you lose the right to complain about police. It' simple. But they don't get it.

When it comes to bangers, maybe one out of ten doesn't snitch when he's jammed up.

Seriously most of them like to fly the flag and dress up, but have no intention of going down for a fellow gang member. They'll toss that dude under the buss in a split second.

I'm sure the percentage varies a bit by region, but for the most part, as long as nobody finds out, gangs are happy to have the cops solve their problems for them. The trick is, to make sure nobody finds out so you keep getting tips.

[–]Tr0llphace 22 points23 points ago

And in his final dying breath, he pulled the cop closer and whispered in his ear..

"YO.. LO.."

[–]southnole 4 points5 points ago

LOL this had me crying.

[–]EnorMoose 7 points8 points ago

[–]StaceyKingRules 9 points10 points ago

It's the Chicago way.

[–]GrayStudios 1 point2 points ago

No snitchin'.

[–]Trojanbp 2 points3 points ago

As a black guy, this infuriates me and adds on to why I dislike a lot of black people

[–]xxslayer77xx 1 point2 points ago

you shoot good guy greg........refuses to tell police who did it.

[–]Gjeesterphlunnie 30 points31 points ago

I see this all the time as an ER worker in Decatur, il... Ridiculous... At least people like this generally only kill each other an leave the rest of us alone.

[–]rattoucher 54 points55 points ago

I learned from the wire that shooting Taxpayers is not part of the game.

[–]OldOrder 16 points17 points ago

Omar comin' yo

[–]Frankeh 9 points10 points ago

Yeah, but then you hear about gang initiations and realise they don't give a fuck.

Related, and the story teller is awesome.

[–]chocki305 27 points28 points ago

Until you realize they have no care for bystanders, and horrible aim when trying to act all gangster while holding a leathel weapon.

[–]panzerbjorne 24 points25 points ago

but why would bystanders be living in hamsterdam anyway?

[–]pathending 9 points10 points ago

i would have laughed if he said "yolo..."

[–]faceback 11 points12 points ago

Philly too. snitches get stitches, in the morgue.

[–]tEnPoInTs 9 points10 points ago

I am kind of embarrassed because Baltimore actually had a widespread "Stop snitching" campaign. It is generally accepted that you don't witness shit in this city.
