Why is it so common that a vehicle will die, stall, run out of gas, or magically stop on the worst 6 feet of the road right before a train comes by!?!

[–]groglisterine 5 points6 points ago

My thinking is that a regular driver, it could be anyone, me or you, thinks 'Ahh man, I can't be bothered to wait for this train to pass', and speeds up at the crossing. Then, the driver realises that actually the train is closer than they thought, and they slam on the brakes, or generally hesitate, probably stalling the vehicle in the process. The van in the gif was probably old and/or overloaded and they couldn't easily start the engine again. It happens all too often.

Please, never risk it.

It's called the availability heuristic.

... "to save others' van". Why would you stay inside that car??? Story video linked by OP doesn't work (for me), maybe there's the answer.

[–]yasemann 2 points3 points ago

*save the car of others.

There's honestly no way that train was going fast enough to kill the people in that van. Just saying.

Sorry if it's a repost. Here's the story.

I forgot to run it through karma decay but, in my defense, I searched for a variety of key words in Reddit's oh-so-handy search bar before posting. I didn't see the gif anywhere so I went for it. Sorry if I upset you naebae. It seems that a couple hundred people were okay with it, at least.

Did anyone else notice how the van brakes immediately after crossing the tracks?

[–]porterpot 1 point2 points ago

Not sure how he made it back across in time dragging those 10lb testicles.

Bike rider is slack as f@#$

[–]conrad98 0 points1 point ago

You know...because bikes stand up on their own if you jump off of them and junk. He would have the kickstand down by the time the van was across the tracks.

I'm fairly confidant that no one would have died in that situation.

[–]6fast6furious -1 points0 points ago

Yeah, you can clearly see the train slowing to a stop. The dude would definitely get fucked up, but I'd be pretty shocked if he ended up dead.

[–]Nebulaoblivion 1 point2 points ago

Not to mention it is entirely possible to step out of your van and avoid injury.

Of course, that doesn't account for what might happen to that passenger train if slams into the van. There is certainly the possibility that it derails.
