It's kind of depressing when you think about it... That trainer out there in the big world with nothing but 3 or 4 Magikarps. He's probably feeling good, he's got Pokemon at least. And that's all that really matters... But there's a part of him, deep inside his heart, that yearns to be a pokemon master like you or the Elite Four. But all his pokemon know only Splash. They can't defend themselves. They can't force other Pokemon on the defensive.

He tries desperately to level up his pokemon to realize his dream, only to be crushed time and time again as a result of his petty pokemon. He's forced into debt as he has to pay every winner money after they destroy his whole team. He has to scramble to the Pokemon Center to revive his Magikarps every time they faint. Sometimes he just feels like giving up. He has to fish for food just to survive and his pokemon are essentially worthless in terms of battle.

He slowly succumbs to his fate as a fisherman; fishing up more and more Magikarps in hopes that this new catch will be different. This one will be powerful. But to no avail. He is stuck, lost in time with no escape out other than hoping some day that someone with even more weak pokemon than his will come along and he will finally be victorious. But no one ever comes. He is weak. He is frail. He is forgotten. The plight of a fisherman...

He has to fish for food just to survive..

Not looking for holes or anything, but does he eat his own Magikarp?

Word of God says there are other animals out there used for food, even though you never ever encounter any of them or see any trace of them. Nor does anyone ever mention them. You just have to take it at face value that there are other sources of food.

That depends on your idea of the Pokemon universe. Is there just Pokemon as animals or are there normal animals as well? If the latter, then I'm inclined to say he just eats normal fish. I don't know of any references to real world animals in the anime or manga as I haven't looked into it for myself that much. But as /u/TribalTribesman pointed out in his comment, they seem to be a possibility.

But one day, many years later, an old man with a team full of beat gyarados knocks on your door.

is it actually possible to go into debt in pokemon? ive never tried but what happens when you lose a battle with only 0/1 pokedollars left?

Did it grinding the elite four. Nothing happens, the battle just ends and you white out.

The man is obviously trying to get some badass gyarados. Step 1. Catch magikarp Step 2. Battle Step 3. ????? (splash?) Step 4. unleash hell with gyarados

Good Guy Fisherman just wants your Pokemon to have a decent speed stat by giving you easy speed EV training
