Upper left of Local Superclusters-- For sure a penis.

So...space dicks?

.. and yet some people believe we are the only intelligent life in the universe

[–]Max_W_[S] 3 points4 points ago

...and some debate that...

... and some use ellipses to uncertain effect ...

[–]Elostirion 3 points4 points ago

And some fail to realize that though this is strictly incorrect usage, the effect is quite well understood among netizens to be some sort of whimsical trailing off...

Good news! We are, indeed, the center of the observable universe. All our self-importance is right on the money!

[–]beer_is_tasty 2 points3 points ago

Science here, can confirm. Bill Nye and Neil Degrasse Tyson will back me up on this.

[–]fing3roperation -1 points0 points ago

wait, aren't we the center of the observable universe, because we observe the universe to the same depth 360° around us? there is almost certainly more out there.

Whoooosh. ~

Man's journey into Hyperspace needs more focus.

I feel that we've seen thousands of this kind of picture/animation showing how small we are, but this one is somewhat particularly compelling.

Thanks for posting!

Wow, we sure are tiny...

[–]varietygamer[!] 1 point2 points ago

It's big, bitch. Really big.

Are these images to-scale?

[–]Rynxx 1 point2 points ago

Some of them are definitely not.

Every single time I see this, I feel a little humbled.

how can we get pictures/maps of our milky way, let alone location in the universe, if the farthest satellite has barely reached the edge of our solar system?

[–]Rampachs 1 point2 points ago

Telescopes? We see what light has traveled to Earth.

May I ask why it's in the shape of a cylinder rather than a sphere?

[–]Max_W_[S] 1 point2 points ago

I would think it is because a sphere is hard to gauge the depth in a diagram. Let's face it, a sphere is a circle when printed 2d. So, making it a cylinder allows one to see the depth rather than just infer it.

This is pretty much meta-map porn.

[–]LazyNoGood 1 point2 points ago

I wonder if many many years from now, two humans will have a talk about how good/bad their interstellar neighborhood is...

Virgo Supercluster represent!

Let's have a meetup.

[–]dog_on_acid 0 points1 point ago

wow i think this is the best depicted map of the universe i've ever seen; really puts into perspective our size in the wider universe

[–]TheBraveTroll 0 points1 point ago

This is nothing.

THIS. Really puts it into perspective.
