hump, refers to a hump, or a hill. Push long train up hill very slowly. One man uncouples car, man in tower pushes buttons to throw switches. Sort trains in record time compared to using an engine. Fully loaded cars smashing into unloaded cars.... well. yeah.

I'm sure you know this, but just to make it clear, hump yards are still in common use. There are retarders that slow them down so the impact isn't as severe as you're implying. Obviously, this sort method is used pretty much exclusively for freight cars which are designed for it. Looks like this is some kind of passenger or maintenance of way car that isn't designed for sorting in a hump yard, hence the note.
