I'm sorry to be a nay-sayer but a quick check on karmadecay showed that this same comic was posted as recently as 12 hours and 16 hours ago in this same sub (not to mention the post a month ago, the ones from two months ago, or the one from three months ago). I'm sorry to say that while I found this funny, I had to change my upvote to a downvote.

To OP, you probably didn't see those other posts so it probably wasn't intentional but my downvote still applies. Next time, try using karmadecay to see if anyone else has posted it recently.

Reddit would be a place devoid of entertainment if people did that. I can honestly say about 75% of the time I see someone post up karmadecay to show a repost I have never before seen the content.

12 hours ago, 16 hours ago, one month ago, two months ago, or even three months ago. Not a one of those matters because I'm just now seeing this for the first time.

Could you imagine if this was the standard for sharing music? What if there was a way to look at every song someone has heard before (ignoring the fact that both content and songs can be forgotten) to see if you have a song they haven't ever heard. You can't show them your song if you haven't checked their database. Would you really bother to dig through thousands, possibly millions of songs to see if you had something new for them? .. or would you just say fuck it and walk away? My bet is there would be a large number of bands people had never heard of from people not wanting to take the risk of showing them something they'd heard before.

It's actually kind of silly if you think about it that way.

It wouldn't be devoid of entertainment, at least not the way I use reddit. I love seeing new, interesting/entertaining pics, videos, and discussions on here. I understand that this post was new to you (and probably plenty of other people) but don't you find it a little bit crazy that it was posted three times in the same day on the same subreddit? It'd be one thing if the earlier post didn't do well and OP waited a day or something before reposting it.

Plus, it's in the reddiquette, the rules that we're supposed to follow here on Reddit. Rules are important. If you think the rule is bogus, try to change it (totally possible if others feel the same way). But until then, that's the rule that we follow here.

Is it still a rule if nobody follows it? Is it a rule worth having if every time something gets reposted at least one person in the post says it's their first time seeing it?

I don't post much, so it really matters very little to me. However, time and again I see "reposts" and there's always people who post to let everyone know it was a repost, which really only informs people who have never seen it before as everyone who knows it's a repost don't need telling. And time and again in the same "reposts" there are just as many people saying that it's their first time seeing it, or that they'd forgotten all about it.

The sidebar contains guidelines, not rules.

There are two rules to reddit. 1) Agree with it/like it, upvote it. 2) Disagree with it/don't like it, downvote it.

The masses will decide. The masses decided this was worth seeing, repost or not, so the guidelines actually mean very little.

I guess I have to repeat myself... If you disagree with a rule (or even a guideline), bring up a discussion of the rule and why it should/shouldn't be changed. It happens all the time on various subreddits.

Things like "Rehosted webcomics will be removed" are not just little suggestions.

The same "masses" that you say decide are the ones to decide our rules/guidelines and we're the ones who get to choose what subreddit we go to and what rules/guidelines it will have. If the masses change their minds to specifically say that rehosted webcomics and recent reposts are okay, then the community will reflect that.

I'd argue that there's a different rule besides the two you listed (and which kind of includes them): Reddit is a community; work with the community. This doesn't mean that you have to be part of a hivemind circlejerk but it suggests a reason behind what we do here. We share, we discuss, we help, and part of this includes voting for what we like and moderating our subreddits.

If someone is going to post something that they think is worthwhile, then they should also try to check that it hasn't been posted recently and (probably more importantly) that they are posting it properly. When you go to post to /r/funny, you can see the sidebar which says the rule about rehosted webcomics. If you're posting a comic, you might want to double check to see if you can find an original site.
