Manute Bol 7'7 & Spudd Webb 5'7 in case anyone was curious.

[–]Hornetsslowchild25 15 points16 points ago

This one always cracks me up.

[–]Sunscrapcrapcrapcrap 29 points30 points ago

Was manute bol any good? While he is tall, he certainly doesn't seem like the most athletic of people.

[–]Cavaliersredcthulhu 43 points44 points ago

He got WAY more rebounds than he did points, he was a specialty player.

EDIT: Blocks, too.

[–]Lakersmjbatt 36 points37 points ago

Only player in history to have more blocks than points

[–]HaV0C 30 points31 points ago

He could block some shots too.

[–]Bulletstylerbird 9 points10 points ago

I love his shooting stroke. Watching him rain 3s then blocking shots like a mad man is amazing.

[–]LakersSaMoSetter 34 points35 points ago

His man ability was as a shot blocker. He was surprisingly resilient though, and developed a pretty decent 3PT shot to add to his game. Good guy.

[–]ThunderDiquebutt 35 points36 points ago

A good and hilarious 3pt shot. No jumps, only arms, final destination.

[–]Lakersdeveldevil 35 points36 points ago

Like a trebuchet.

[–]Rocketsmendicant111 2 points3 points ago

[–]CelticsRedshark 2 points3 points ago

Ya gotta get a hand in his face. LOL

[–]Rocketsmendicant111 1 point2 points ago

Without even having listened to the audio on that clip, I'm going to guess that's a Hubie Brown quote.

[–]Sartuk 0 points1 point ago

I just want to add in that his 3 point shot really never became "pretty decent". I mean, given his form and the fact that he was so ridiculously tall...I guess it was impressive. But it was never "decent", except for his 6 three-pointer game.

But, yes, he actually had some value despite being completely inept offensively and being built like a twig. Really fairly impressive.

[–]Trail BlazersRoosterRMcChesterh 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, he was never a reliable 3 point shooter. He averaged less than 2 points a game and he made 43 3-pointers over his career. He went seasons without event attempting one.

[–]LakersSaMoSetter 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, didn't write it but was thinking in relation to your average center of his time when you rarely saw them attempt 3's. I mean he took 91 3's in 1988-89 and made 20 of them. Decent for his position and era I'd say. Loved when Barkley would mess with him!

[–]HidekiTojosShinyHead 7 points8 points ago

Not a bad player, but being built like the world's largest stick figure limited his potential. Excellent shot blocker by virtue of his height.

[–]DimitriK 1 point2 points ago

It makes me uncomfortable watching video of him. He did hit like 5 threes in one game though.

[–]Celticsfiction8 2 points3 points ago

The wingspan makes this look like so much more than a 2 foot difference...

[–]Lakersdangots0ul 5 points6 points ago

7'7 with like a 10 feet wingspan. Looks like he could grab rim without even jumping.

[–]Lakersjavinet1492 19 points20 points ago

I believe the term you're looking for is standing reach. But ya his standing reach is crazy!

[–]kvnryn 18 points19 points ago

Wingspan is fingertip to fingertip. His was 8'6" according to this site.

[–]DimitriK 0 points1 point ago

And your assumption would be correct.

[–]LakersChiddaling 45 points46 points ago

I think I found Slenderman

[–]Celticstimesnewboston 16 points17 points ago

I wonder who in NBA history had the highest vertical as a percentage of their height. Possible Spudd? Robinson? Was Bogues a high flyer?

[–]CelticsReptar69 12 points13 points ago

Bogues was obviously very athletic but I don't think his leaping ability is quite to the level of Spud or Nate. If I had to guess who had the highest verticle relative to their height I'd probably say Nate. Dude can get up.

[–]AustraliaProtatotype 1 point2 points ago

Researched a bit: Nate Robinson Vertical Leap: 43" Spud Webb Vertical Leap: 42"

1.75 m Nate Robinson, Height

1.70 m Spud Webb, Height

[–]CelticsNutella_the_Hun 2 points3 points ago

43 / 1.75 = 24.57

42 / 1.70 = 24.71

[–]Lakerscanucksoul 1 point2 points ago

Aren't those vertical measurements in inches? I think it'd be better if we converted it into CM so we can get a more accurate percentage.

  • Nate Robinson, height - 175cm, vertical - 109cm; vertical/height % = 62.3%

  • Spud Webb, height - 170cm, vertical - 106.7cm; vertical/height % = 62.8%

[–]NBAGyang193 8 points9 points ago

Im 5'8" and dont have hops, so no hope either :(

[–]kkopi27 60 points61 points ago

I tried drinking lots of beer to improve my vertical. Turns out hops isn't always = hops.

...yeah, I'll see myself out.

[–]Pistonshussard_de_la_mort 13 points14 points ago

If that was the case, I'd be throwing down windmills like Vince.

[–]BullsTripodi12[S] 0 points1 point ago

haha yeah i'm about the same, sucks...

[–]Raptorsdeadskin -4 points-3 points ago

Are you black? If so, you may have a chance.

[–]Hornetsdaybreaker 9 points10 points ago

[–]LakersPhillyWick 21 points22 points ago

How did he survive in the nba with no muscle mass? I'm 6'1" and feel like I could back him down in the post..

[–]laddal 11 points12 points ago

Well, at first I thought he was probably much stronger than he looked and his muscles were just stretched over a much larger area. However, this says he could only bench 110 lbs.

[–]Celticssoxandpatriots1 20 points21 points ago

While it's true that he wasn't very strong, it's worth noting that it's waaayyy harder to bench when your arms are that long. There's just so much further for your arms to travel. Still, 110 is not very much at all; Yao Ming is almost as tall as Manute, and I remember reading that he could bench at least 300 or so.

[–]DimitriK 10 points11 points ago

And not coincidentally, Yao was a much better NBA player.

[–]Sartuk 5 points6 points ago

A lot of tall NBA guys have pretty miserable bench presses for their weights. And, yes, a lot of that is thanks to their long arms: bench pressing with incredibly long arms is tough. KD couldn't do 185 at the combine before he was drafted.

[–]Trail BlazersRoosterRMcChesterh -3 points-2 points ago

Damn, I coulda played in the NBA.

[–]fragilemachinery 2 points3 points ago

When you're that tall, just standing near the basket is fairly effective. In the end though, he was a role player. His only exceptional skill was his shot blocking ability (in '88-'89 he led the league in blocks despite playing 22 min/game). He was a complete non-factor offensively (40/21/56 shooting and virtually no assists will do that), and he was a mediocre rebounder given his height (8 REB/36 for his career).

[–]76ersbleyva 8 points9 points ago

The more I see pics of him, the more I realize that Manute Bol was a tree. An actual tree wearing a basketball uniform.

[–]MavsZeppelanoid 3 points4 points ago

Manute eat a sandwich please.

[–]ElGoddamnDorado 4 points5 points ago

God Spud had a crazy vertical. Obligatory dunk contest video

[–]Imbu3 3 points4 points ago

R.I.P. Manute Bol

[–]BullsTripodi12[S] 1 point2 points ago

giving short people everywhere hope

[–]HeatTheFlyLife 1 point2 points ago

They should have put Mugsy Bouges against him instead.

[–]snowy247 0 points1 point ago

Dude genuinely looks like a spider.

[–]rtillaree 0 points1 point ago

I always found it funny that these guys played college ball together. Crazy how life intertwines I guess.

[–]LakersSaMoSetter -1 points0 points ago

This is when they player together for the Rhode Island Gulls of the USBL if memory serves correct. Amazing that Manute's forearm is about as long as Spud's entire arm.

[–]LakersSlylingual24 0 points1 point ago

I remember when Andrew Bynum's legs looked that fragile.

[–]Warriorsemmawatsonsbf 0 points1 point ago

Manute would've been perfect for a Slenderman film.
