Canberra fires from 2003

Warning: This is pretty horrific, no gore as such, but burning homes, fire trucks, and pretty much a vision of hell.

A real life disaster movie.

In Australia, we call it "summer"

[–]DoucheBurglar 9 points10 points ago

Much much worse... mainly because Creed was playing the whole time. Such a tragedy.

[–]I_hate_whales 0 points1 point ago

I started laughing so hard when the music started. I feel like such an ass :(

[–]withateethuh 3 points4 points ago

WELL I JUST HERD

[–]TipsTheJust 5 points6 points ago

Darrell Thornthwaite is a fucking badass.

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

A damn hero. How many people did he save? The crew of Bravo 3, those civilians he found in the street at various times...dude deserves a statue and free beer.

[–]CryWolf13 7 points8 points ago

We have quite a few bad fires here in southern California. A few really bad ones also.

[–]PAUL_SCHOLES_AMA 3 points4 points ago

Sydney and California are very similar in many ways.

[–]Tea_Vea 5 points6 points ago

Such as that Eucalypts exacerbate forest fires in both places.

[–]Clauderoughly -2 points-1 points ago

Eucalypts exude a fine mist of oil, to allow the fire to pass by them quickly. They evolved this over hundreds of thousands of years in Australia, as the native people burnt small patches on a regular basis.

Get enough Eucalypts in one spot, and you end up with a situation similar to a Daisy cutter Or Fuel/Air bomb

[–]dreamingtree 2 points3 points ago

No; the oil is actually contained in the leaves and is what helps start the fires. The bark of the eucalyptus tree is what insulates it from the fire, allowing it to survive; with new buds sprouting from the base of the tree (lignotuber). That said, they do still have a tendency to explode - thanks to the oil in the leaves.

[–]corcyra 1 point2 points ago

And in southern Europe they've had some of the worst summer fires in decades. Last October I drove through the places in Catalonia where this year's fires turned everything to toast..very sad.

[–]zzpza 2 points3 points ago

Your comment reminded me of this video of some Russians driving through a forest fire to escape it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kB0T2M8jDBw

[–]corcyra 1 point2 points ago

They must be insane.@_@

[–]serviceenginesoon 0 points1 point ago

I believe in parts of Australia, a few years back, they had people die in cars because they were trying to out run the fires that at some point were going over hundred miles an hour and were burning the tires on the vehicles and , you can guess the rest...

[–]CryWolf13 1 point2 points ago

We had four firefighter die a couple years back. They were trapped in their vehicle

[–]sweetmercy 0 points1 point ago

During the fires in 2003 here in California, there were people who didn't make it from their home to their car in the driveway before the fire took them. Scary shit, that.

[–]jimmux 2 points3 points ago

I was there for those fires. It was an interesting few days, as I was house-sitting a somewhat safe distance from the fires but close to bushland. Between keeping the radio going 24 hours for updates, and relatives calling every 2 hours to make sure I was still alive, I got very little sleep.

It's also a weird feeling when you have everything you own prioritised in case of evacuation. Fortunately I was student with few possessions and only a bicycle for transport, so the decision to save my skin and little else was an easy one.

[–]Youngadillo 2 points3 points ago

I was working at the EB's at Woden when we lost power to the whole fucking mall. We evacuated, went outside and it was raining fucking fire! One of the most terrifying things I've ever seen.

[–]dizzystuff 1 point2 points ago

Which suburb were you in?

[–]jimmux 0 points1 point ago

Hackett

[–]britishguitar 1 point2 points ago

I live in Toowoomba/Murphy's Creek, and can say that natural disasters create the eeriest atmosphere. I've been through both fires and floods, and it really is bizarre to see how everything so quickly breaks down.

[–]lisa-needs-braces 0 points1 point ago

I too lived in Canberra for the fires. I was about seven, and as far as I could tell it was a normal weekend morning. Then my Mum took me and my brother to see a movie in Belconnen. We came out and the sky was black and the wind fierce. As a kid, it was about the most exciting thing ever.

[–]dizzystuff 2 points3 points ago

I was 12 years old when those happened. It was god damned scary waiting that night, hoping that the pine forest behind us (in Isaacs for you local redditors) didn't go up in flames.

[–]Youngadillo 1 point2 points ago

LOL ....I helped put out that fire!

Edit: The one behind Isaccs that is

[–]dizzystuff 1 point2 points ago

I don't think an upvote is enough to express my gratitude. Thank you :)

[–]gruso 1 point2 points ago

This shit is bananas.

[–]HaydenB 12 points13 points ago

B. A.N.A.N.A.S

[–]141891141622 0 points1 point ago

colorado this year had its worst fire season yet. over half of the u.s.'s fire fighting resources were put into colorado too combat the flames at what i believe 9-12 forest fires and another large prarrie fire.

[–]Clauderoughly 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I have seen the way the US fires are handled.

They need to come up with much better fire management practices, in terms of back burning during the off season, fire break lines as well as a whole host of other fire management tactics.

Fire seasons like that don't just "happen" there are a whole host of factors that turn a bad fire, into a complete cluster fuck and a lot of those are manageable.

Yeah, you can't control the weather, but you can come up with plans that save as much life and property as possible.

The hard facts are, you can't save everyone or everything. Some places are just going to have to burn.

But, with the right amount of planning, triage and risk management you can save lives and property.

I am not ripping on the US, fire management is HARD, but it can be done

[–]Ecl1pse 0 points1 point ago

Wow, the first few minutes before the footage of the actual fire was tense.

[–]FatMansPants 174 points175 points ago

Americans and their pussy tornado's of wind, we have tornado's of FUCKING FIRE!

[–]prepping4zombies 42 points43 points ago

I wonder if fire tornadoes head straight for trailer parks like wind tornadoes do? Has anyone done the research?

[–]JianKui 45 points46 points ago

Depends. They generally head for wherever you're standing.

[–]aryon984 30 points31 points ago

Pretty much. Australian fires of any kind will hunt you the fuck down.

[–]FatKid4Sale757 2 points3 points ago

There's a lot of that going on over here too... But fire tornadoes!? Naw, fuck that shit... That's a poop inducing nightmare. Tornado-Fire, FIRE FIRE!!!

[–]ZeroHex 0 points1 point ago

Australian fires of any kind will hunt you the fuck down.

Along with most of the wildlife, which we should mention is deadly poisonous and 3 times bigger than counterparts in the rest of the world.

[–]snarkamedes 2 points3 points ago

I understood that the fire tornadoes sucked up all the nearby spiders, snakes, crocs and platypi, just to set them alight and deliberately fling them at nearby tourists.

[–]eternitygeekout 21 points22 points ago

Americans and their pussy tornadoes of wind, we have tornado's of FUCKING FIRE! flammin' willy willies.

[–]InsaniaKsc 7 points8 points ago

If they call their tornadoes of death that, imagine what kind of hell on earth they call natural disaster. o.O

[–]Kinetic_Waffle 7 points8 points ago

Black Saturday. Our country burns, the fires turn the sky to ash, flames measured three hundred feet high.

Some footage to give you an idea of what it looked like.

Link to more info.

[–]sweetmercy 7 points8 points ago

Yeah...so do we. In Hawaii, in California, in California, in California.

[–]Dukelicious 12 points13 points ago

We have these in America too, although to be fair, the Australian ones are venomous.

[–]HugeForehead 4 points5 points ago

Would rather have a little fire tornado coming at me than this. http://i.imgur.com/1mI1i.jpg

[–]TipsTheJust 3 points4 points ago

Fucking-fire, huh? My sex life could sure use some of that.

[–]dogoargentino 1 point2 points ago

It's called chlamydia.

[–]FatMansPants 1 point2 points ago

Damn you have a sex life? That's just showing off Sir.

[–]levilarrington 2 points3 points ago

Yet, you have failed to stop the baby eating dingos.

[–]shenanigins 1 point2 points ago

I don't understand, this happens in the US too. During the SoCal wildfires in 03 and 07 I saw it a few times. Shit happens when it gets windy, that's all.

[–]deeperest 0 points1 point ago

Hey, those are found elsewhere.....but in Australia, they're poisonous.

[–]TheLoneHoot 1 point2 points ago

Americans and their pussy tornado's of wind, we have tornado's of FUCKING FIRE!

They probably also contain spiders the size of your average Holden and snakes that can kill you with a stare.

[–]KaleStrider 0 points1 point ago

It has also happened in California.

[–]blanketyblanks 106 points107 points ago

as an australian, i can assure you we're all coast hugging pansies

[–]baremonkey 88 points89 points ago

Speak for yourself, ya coast hugging pansy.

[–]ICouldEatAKnobAtNite 8 points9 points ago

The good sir speaks on my behalf, ya cunt.

[–]frozenfisherman 2 points3 points ago

Onya!

[–]Kinetic_Waffle 0 points1 point ago

Fuckin' A mate. This 'coast huggin pansy' was there for Black Saturday.

[–]PAUL_SCHOLES_AMA 1 point2 points ago

I don't usually do this but your username is classic. I can't remember but what episode was it where Karl actually said that? Why did he say it? It's funny that Ricky Gervais asked someone out there to make a remix of it. The ones on YouTube are pretty funny.

[–]Stinkis 2 points3 points ago

They where talking about some fear factor episode where they ate kangaroo penises. He then wondered what time during the day it was shot because he has problems eating in the morning and wouldn't be able to do it then but he "could eat a knob at night".

[–]Dinosaur_Monstertrux 3 points4 points ago

I can see you've played the ol' coasty-inlandy before

[–]gumblegod 0 points1 point ago

HAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh spot on!!

[–]dizzystuff 7 points8 points ago

I'm from Canberra. Therefore not coast hugging, but definitely pansy.

[–]FatMansPants 0 points1 point ago

Yeah that middle bit is just fucking scary !!!!

[–]Snazz 13 points14 points ago

Awww, that's just a little fire willy-willy

You should see our big fire cyclones!

[–]phantom_lord 11 points12 points ago

Tropical FireCyclone Bazza was brutal. Lest we forget.

[–]Ephemeralis 1 point2 points ago

Right up - Brisbane smelt like burnt flesh for weeks!

[–]phantom_lord -1 points0 points ago

The smell neared the emotional cost in magnitude

[–]Ephemeralis 0 points1 point ago

It was a sad day.

The pubs even ran out of VB. Something about it fueling the blaze - bunch of fuckin' wankers.

[–]phantom_lord 0 points1 point ago

Must have been coopers red then

[–]Ephemeralis 0 points1 point ago

or fosters, augh

[–]Warx 0 points1 point ago

Was that before or after the FireCyclone?

[–]Ephemeralis 0 points1 point ago

Worse than it usually does after a Friday evening.

[–]Sillylovesongs 38 points39 points ago

Dear Australia,

Why you so crazy?

Regards, Everything that's not Australia.

[–]wiggen_tree 34 points35 points ago

Everything is at least 60% more deadly in Australia. Even the fucking wind is made out of fire.

[–]sensiblepredator 32 points33 points ago

Australian here, I can confirm this "wind's of fire" statement. Shit burns your ass hairs.

[–]thisgameissoreal 9 points10 points ago

Shit does, or fire-wind?

[–]the_last_fartbender 6 points7 points ago

Don't fart while doing the Dance of the Flaming Asshole then.

[–]deltaosiris 6 points7 points ago

We heed such wisdom here, o great master wind breaker.

[–]xXNickelbackRulezXx 1 point2 points ago

So Earth, Wind & Fire are Australian then?

[–]lukefwjross 1 point2 points ago

As an Australian Fire Fighter, I can confirm this.

[–]AzMoo 20 points21 points ago

If you walk 12km down the road from there it's probably flooding.

[–]Tokugawa 11 points12 points ago

Assuming an animal doesn't kill you on the way.

[–]mcstafford 10 points11 points ago

Y'all don't do things half way down there, do you?

[–]CanIGetaHellYeah 19 points20 points ago

We laugh and think.. this is Australia

[–]britishguitar 1 point2 points ago

Well, that's on repeat now.

[–]librlman 9 points10 points ago

Which town was that, Sodom or Gomorrah?

[–]MouthPoop 16 points17 points ago

I have no idea what's going on here so I'm just gonna believe fire tornado's exist.

[–]keeerazay 4 points5 points ago

It's a eucalyptus tree exploding, is it?

[–]EULALIAAAAA 12 points13 points ago

Nope, it's really a tornado of fire.

Damn nature, you scary.

[–]Warx 0 points1 point ago

Must of been that Time again

[–]phantom_lord 4 points5 points ago

I saw something similar in Darwin last year near where I live. It was a large grass fire, but oh man it looked satanic. Everyone was shitting a big one on my street, as we were unsure if it was controlled. This was when I saw my first rotating column of fire and smoke, and it shot up a good 500 feet.

[–]HappyonaShelf 1 point2 points ago

A satanic grass fire in a place called Darwin? "Surely God's wrath is visited upon ye..." Pat Robertson

[–]kickasserole 4 points5 points ago

I'm pretty sure that's the Vagina of Sauron. You guys are in trouble.

One does not simply walk in there.

[–]hannahalexia 0 points1 point ago

As an Australian I can confirm this is my average run in to work each morning.

[–]Fawful 2 points3 points ago

What, is your kangaroo in the shop? You can roopool with me, I've got a 2 seater.

YOU SHALL NOT PASS!

[–]SpeakerCity310 0 points1 point ago

Reminds me of when the Gulf was full of oil from the BP spill. There was a picture floating around the interwebs illustrating how a hurricane or tropical storm was going to come in and lighting would ignite the oil and cause a super fire hurricane.

[–]constipationnow 0 points1 point ago

Just a phenomenon of equilibrium; balance.

If there are big NOPE-creatures, there must be incredible fires to fight them.

[–]verkon 0 points1 point ago

Seeing as it is Australia it is probably poisonous as well

[–]zuluthrone 0 points1 point ago

Australians thought life was getting too tame so they summoned biblical pillars of fire to keep things interesting.

[–]GreenerKnight 0 points1 point ago

I only see like eleven spiders in that picture, I can only assume they were airbrushed out to focus attention to the unholy firestorm?

[–]Swordfish08 0 points1 point ago

You guys... You know these can happen anywhere, right?

[–]Moonstrife 0 points1 point ago

Australia: Where even the air want to kill you.

I bet you this is where the idea of "Dragons" came from.

Australia is hell. It's official.

[–]moeoriginal 0 points1 point ago

This is my ass's result after late night spicy Mexican food and alcohol.
