Main site: The Post Collapse Wiki

This Subreddit is for planning and preparing for what comes after a collapse of society.

The end goal is a downloadable wiki focused on the following goals:

  • Teaching people to prepare for a catastrophic event

  • Teaching people what to do during a catastrophic event

  • How to fend for yourself and your family long term(self defense, finding food, building shelter, etc)

  • How to effectively lead survival groups

Planning the world after the apocalypse, as it were.

Overwhelmed and don't know where to start?

But what kind of mileage does it get?

[–]Airazz 15 points16 points ago

Yes, I really hope it can run on logs or something...

[–]montysaurus 20 points21 points ago

make it run on a wood gasifier? challenge accepted

[–]DeepGreen 2 points3 points ago

That would work if it were a petrol* engine, I am willing to bet a truck that size is diesel.

*GAS in yank speak.

[–]Baalenlil7 2 points3 points ago

Tank yoo! Us Mericans to dumb to no what yoo ment

[–]corr0sive 2 points3 points ago

Truck like that, I would guess its diesel. Not sure if you could convert it to Bio-Diesel, but I sure as hell would if I could.

[–]BlandSauce 7 points8 points ago

Oh, certainly. You're just going to have to make quite a bit of it.

[–]NoMoreNicksLeft 0 points1 point ago

Where would you get biodiesel? If you're going to make your own, it means settling down somewhere. Which makes the RV useless.

[–]corr0sive 0 points1 point ago

Well I meant bio-diesel/used cooking oil. Which(depending on what year the engine was made) can be used as fuel, you just have to strain out the solid chunks...

[–]NoMoreNicksLeft 0 points1 point ago

So this is good right until collapse happens.

[–]rusteh 13 points14 points ago

This was actually built by a redditors Dad, I'll see if I can find the original thread with photos of the build

edit: never mind, here is the original thread http://ds.reddit.com/r/DIY/comments/xgj4v/my_dad_build_his_own_offroad_motor_home_here_are/ he built something very similar to what the OP posted, which is actually the TerraCross http://terracross.com/

[–]babbish 1 point2 points ago

I was just looking at these today, I think the correct link is http://www.unicat.net/ua/en/ and more http://www.unicat.net/ua/en/index2-TerraCross.html

glad you found this, I was thinking of the same thing but couldn't remember which subreddit I saw it in, pretty badass.

[–]indgosky 8 points9 points ago

So the windows are only clear on the inside?

[–]HittingSmoke 11 points12 points ago

[–]Maxion 9 points10 points ago

That's actually quite smart. Keeps the windows clean when you drive in mud. If I had 10 million I'd buy one.

[–]Kilcannon 5 points6 points ago

There is quite a bit of extra vertical as well, so my assumption is that the top raises up, revealing the windows and adding extra head-room.

[–]Eurasian-HK 7 points8 points ago

[–]sbk8211 8 points9 points ago

that will be great until you run out of gas

[–]Mortos3 1 point2 points ago

I thought that as well. Does this company, Unicat, make electric vehicles?

[–]NovelTAcct 5 points6 points ago

Where's the bed?

I have a thing for beds.

[–]myotheralt 2 points3 points ago

You are sitting on it in the second photo.

[–]NovelTAcct 0 points1 point ago

WAT

[–]myotheralt 1 point2 points ago

I think I saw this on Discovery. The bed is behind the camera in the second shot. The lower level has the office and galley, the dining area is the transition, and the bed is on top.

[–]pork2001 5 points6 points ago

But, since it's based on a converted garbage truck, it gets the gas mileage of a garbage truck. And I'd hate to drive it in mud.

[–]DarbyDay 2 points3 points ago

So do they still smell like garbage trucks?

[–]mikepixie 1 point2 points ago

A friend of mine drove from Germany to Australia in a converted 6 weeler Pinzgauer. His setup inside was not as luxury as this but it was pretty awesome. He had a modified shipping container on the back, he installed power steering and sorted the engine to be dual fuel.

[–]slackerthereal 1 point2 points ago

Austria

ftfy

[–]mikepixie 1 point2 points ago

No he drove to Australia, he drove across Russia to Beijing, from Beijing he drove to Singapore via Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Malaysia. From there he traversed the larger islands of Indonesia catching ferries between them. Lastly he caught a ferry ferry from Papua New Guinea to the north coast of Austrailia where he sold the Pinz.

If you were referencing Dumb and Dumber it was a poor attempt at humour.

[–]slackerthereal -1 points0 points ago

No, its just that you can't literally drive across the ocean in a truck. assumed you meant austria. (americans tended to confuse the two quite a bit back before the aussie dollar became more expensive than the good ole petro dollar.)

[–]mikepixie -1 points0 points ago

Aye, but technically he did drive there, the same way I drive to France by catching a ferry. Agreed though that it may be confusing for Americans!

[–]GreatBigPig 2 points3 points ago

I think a fuel sucker like this would be a bad idea for post collapse.

[–]Dark_Shroud 0 points1 point ago

I was thinking of taking the easy way out, 6x6 with a camper on the back.

[–]mmmgawa 1 point2 points ago

This is an awesome vehicle but it comes with a price these things cost a ton and only run on gas. Trim the fat out of it a bit so it is not so top heavy, cut the cost down to 5k, and make it multi-fuel like my M109 and then we can talk.

[–]parlimentfunk 0 points1 point ago

pic????

[–]mmmgawa 2 points3 points ago

I don't have any pics handy here at work and I just got it 6 months ago so it is a work in progress. As it sits right now it looks like every other M-109 but it is in perfect running condition. I am now working on the planning to make it RVish. Here is an awesome M-109 build to reference though

[–]gathly 0 points1 point ago

yes, I want it.

[–]idlefritz 1 point2 points ago

Is this from the new season of Breaking Bad?

[–]tankertodd -1 points0 points ago

All you need to do it paint it a color that will blend into its environment. Unless it's going into the mountains.

[–]LuckyAmeliza 0 points1 point ago

/r/tinyhouses would love this too.

[–]Mortos3 0 points1 point ago

Does anybody know of an electric powered equivalent to this?

[–]DrDeath666 0 points1 point ago

Nice ghetto shelf.

[–]f00dninja 0 points1 point ago

Paint it brown and add some camo netting and you're good to go.

[–]namegoeshere 0 points1 point ago

And he has a KaTooM on the back of it. Man of taste.

[–]Tyyrlym 1 point2 points ago

A truck full of shit that won't work if everything goes to crap and so top heavy you can't drive it anywhere but level ground or on road. No really, why would I want it?

[–]IvoryCoats -1 points0 points ago

Anyone else thinking zombies?

[–]ChickaloonCharlie 8 points9 points ago

I camped (RV, if you can call it camping) next to one of these in British Columbia, except it was tan with black hardware. It is an intimidating machine; just perfect for tacticooling up for zombie defense. We tried talking to the owners but they were French Canadian and wouldn't have any of it.

[–]NoMoreNicksLeft 0 points1 point ago

Because...

I like ugly RVs?

[–]BadAdviceBot 0 points1 point ago
