I bet they were probably just talking about their favorite band.

That would be incredible awkward if they were talking about a band, what would you say? "Sorry about my long rant over nothing...I'm a little touchy..."

[–]darkbeanie 0 points1 point ago

It's a pretty strange way to praise a band; I mainly meant it as a smartass joke (the only kind of joke I seem to make these days). But yeah, if they really were talking about the band, that would be pretty awkward.

Even if they weren't, I think OP was being a bit of a douche anyway. If people want to make religiously-motivated weird, impractical commitments that elevate the act of sex to an importance it does not deserve, hell ... let them. Pick your battles; there are certainly aspects of religion far more deserving of the social risks one takes in speaking out.

I don't like marriage as a whole. First of all people grow and change at different rates so although you may love someone right now they might/will be a totally different person in twenty years, which means that I believe that couples should agree to stay together until they both don't smile at the thought of one another or genuinely enjoy doing day-to-day things to together or even just love each other. Secondly even if you really do love someone completely and unconditional for your entire life and they love you back than why do you need a piece of paper to commit to each other? Thirdly when you legally get married you legitimately give up some of your rights.

Last time I checked, there were three rings for the elven kings, underneath the sky,
Seven for the dwarf lords in their halls of stone
Nine for mortal men, doomed to die,
And one for the Dark Lord on his Dark Throne,
In Mordor, where the shadows lie.

That's twenty. And that doesn't count all the other rings that were lost at the end of the second age.

But remember, there was only one ring called the ring of power.

One ring to rule them all, one ring to find them, one ring to bring them all, and in the darkness, smite them.

there was only one ring called the ring of power.

Ahem.

I stand corrected then, thanks for setting me straight.

Also, the inscription says "And in the darkness bind them". "Smite" doesn't even rhyme.

So it does. I had to pull down my book to check. My apologies.
